With 24 days until Free Agency -- Expansion and a Flat Cap What moves will Treliving and the Flames make.

1. Joe Colborne - Arbitration will not be kind to the Flames in Joe's case and while he has put up decent numbers point wise Joe has failed to fill the role the team requires of him. Joe will be traded before Free Agency.

2. Bad contracts Mason Raymond, Ladislav Smid, Dennis Wideman, Matt Stajan, Lance Bouma, and Deryk Engelland. $20.1 M in varying degrees of bad contracts.

Raymond will likely be buried in the minors for 1 more year at a cost of $2.2M against cap this year.

Smid and his neck issues are becoming an albatross for the Flames moving forward the best possible move is for Smid to remain on LTIR.

Dennis Wideman will likely find his way out of Calgary before the beginning of free agency. Would not be surprised to see Wideman involved in a trade for a Goalie with an add of a 2nd round pick and an extra piece.

Matt Stajan very well could be bought out and considering his life's travels personally I would not be surprised to see him subsequently retire and take a role within the organization. Stajan at 32 is amazing in the dressing room by all accounts but there is a time when the game has passed you by.

Lance Bouma had a very disappointing season last year. Look for Lance to stay in Cowtown but if this season does not do well expect repercussions.

Deryk Engelland is an over paid 6/7 Dman but has shown that he is able to fill varying roles. Deryk is here until his contract is up.

3. Spare parts are going to be available this year and maybe packaged with others to obtain needed cogs. Brandon Bollig, Josh Jooris, Derek Grant, Kenny Agostino, Garnet Hathaway, Kenny Morrison, Drew Shore, Turner Elson, Bryce Van Brabant, and Kevin Poulin are all available depending on the returns. Look for late round draft picks and players needing a change of scenery as the returns.

Conclusion

If the Treliving can lose 2-3 contracts Colborne may be retained. While the Flames are tight to the cap this year next year looks much better financially as Bollig, Smid, Wideman and Engelland will be coming of the books to the tune of almost $13M.

Goaltender wise expect Wideman to be involved in the trade for one of Fleury, Jimmy Howard, Pavlec, Bishop, Bobrovsky, or Rinne. Expect Calgary to add for Bishop, Fleury. Bobrovsky, Rinne, and Howard all would impact the cap for years to come.
