FYOUS was based upon information given to him. It was also based upon a rational analyses.
1) The rebuild/retool did not start in 2018.. The dumping did. The retool was older
2) this team had a miserable 2011-2016. And began to consolidate and keep picks by 2015.

2015 had 2 picks in R1 and 2 in R2. In early 2019 when Eugene uttered his remarks, those 4 were still seen as gold (at least 3 of them). rd 4 and rd 5 were showing promise.
2016 had a high #1. That was still being regarded as a corner piece. They had a rd5 that was showing promise
2017 rd 2 and rd 4 had 2 very promising young players

And so when the rebuild started (which in reality was nothing more than a dumping) in 2018, 10 guys were in the hopper and 9 of whom were showing tremendous promise.

So the 18 draft and its 3 high picks. Brought the total to 12 players.

A Trade brought, Norris and Branstromm, who still carried high hopes. Nick Paul awoke from his slumber.

So 15 players.. Now they banked on the 19 draft and the 20 draft. They knew the Karlsson trade offered a first. The Stone trade offered a second. So they went into the 19 and 20 drafts with 6-7, #1 and #2

Yea, Eugene believed the rebuild was on schedule. And offered his FYOUS innocently.

Then all heck broke loose. If it could go wrong it did. Many picks faltered. FAs needed to supplement, bombed. Trades were just as bad as FAs.

Eugen was not pulling a stunt. I guarantee you, he was just as disappointed and just as shocked. remember he hired Pierre McGuire in mid summer of 2021.. what was that? that was Eugene saying, "Pierre Dorion, I am f***ing angry at you. and Pierre here may/will replace you if by seasons end FYOUS does not start.".. He died before all of that and was probably incapacitated and busy for the 2-3 months before.

the hockey world no longer allows, "a couple of years to fill gaps". Salaries, the CAP, FA at 7 or 27. ELC burn for collegians if they come out with only a handful of games left. ELC burn with a player in the minors. NTC, NMC and so on.

the net window is 10-11 years. In that, is the FYOUS. It pretty much forces a rebuild into 5-6 years. And pretty much requires 2-4 players on ELC. And another 2-4 on reasonable bridge deals.

the 5-6 year rebuild should have ended 2021/2022 or 2022/2023 and FYOUS should have been 1-2 years old.

Melnyk was no dummy when he declared FYOUS from 2021 onwards. He knew the cycle.

now there is no ELC and the team may force a bridge on Pinto, Greig and Klevin. The 2020 draft class needed to produce the ELCs and Bridge guys (with someone added from the 2021 draft).

The solid core should have been the 2015-2019. Those 5 years produced 5 players, one of which is JBD a 6/7 D man!!

Dallas - 2 ELCs (Johnston and Stankoven)
Florida - 1 ELC (Lundell)
Oilers - 0 ELC
Rangers - 2 ELC (Cuylle and Rempe)

That’s the final 4 right now. Where are the 4 ELCs? I actually can’t remember a team that won with 4 ELCs. It can’t have been many.

FYOUS was a stupid arbitrary timeframe. It never made any sense. And I don’t fully understand why your theory is basing it on that timeframe, because why can’t Greig, Kleven, Ostapchuk and Sogaard for example be the bridge deals and why can’t 7th overall this year, plus 25th overall or next year’s first be the ELCs? It’s just a cycle, when Greig and Kleven etc graduate into regular deals, your other picks go into bridge deals and you bring in new ELC players you’ve drafted. Your older players get moved.

In truth 2020 established our core. Our window is as long as our elite players are here and in their prime. Presumably if you can keep your players, we have plenty of time. Whether we ever get there or not is a different conversation.

Anybody believing that absurd F YOU's announcement was out to lunch. Most laughed it off as nothing to be taken seriously cuz the guy was completely out of rope to be believing anything he had to say at that point.

Realistically, it's not about the timeline, they were just never going to find the path to success under a Melnyk/Dorion regime. It was handicapped and always destined to be fools gold.
