There have been a bunch of threads about various teams and various unique draft classes they have assembled (late round gems, 1st round prowess, etc...)

I was browsing through various teams draft history and I stumbled across the Red Wings' '83 draft (notable for Yzerman being selected #4 overall). But the guys they picked at #46, #88, and #186 stand out as well.

Bob Probert - 3300 PIMs/#5 all time
Joey Kocur - 2519 PIMs/#17 all time
Stu Grimson - 2113 PIMs/#40 all time
Three guys with a PIM total of 7932!! Toss in Stevie's 900+ and it jumps to 8838

Any other big ones out there?

As a year 1988 is pretty impressive. It has 7 players with over 1000 penalty minutes in the NHL:

Tie Domi (3406)
Rob Ray (3207)
Jeremy Roenick (1345),
Rob Blake (1235)
Troy Malette (1226)
Darin Kimble (1082)
Tony Twist (1121)

Honourable mention goes to Link Gaetz with 412 pm's...in 65 games (that's on pace for a 500 pm season)!

The draft also had a number of other pretty gritty characters like Linden and Brindamour

LOL I just looked at the rest of the '83 draft and there are 18 players outside of the 3 the Wings drafted with 1000+ PIMs. 7 in the 1st round alone.
John MacLean - 1333
Cam Neely - 1241
Adam Creighton - 1077
Dave Gagner - 1016
Bob Errey - 1005
Gerald Diduck - 1612
Jeff Beukeboom - 1890, these are the 1st rounders
Claude Lemieux - 1756
Sergio Momesso - 1557
Frank Musil - 1241
Peter Taglianetti - 1106
Marc Bergeven - 1090
Esa Tikkanen - 1077
Garry Galley - 1218
Kevin Stevens - 1468
Dave Lowry - 1191
Rick Tocchet - 2970
Joe Reekie - 1326
Probie, Joey, and Grim
and honorable mentions to John Kordic - 997, Wayne Presley - 953, and Stevie Y - 906.

That's just nuts. Time to find ERR - 22 in a draft. :D

And '82 has 8 such 1st rounders and 23 total (not going to name them all) but notables with 2000+ Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko, Pat Verbeek, Kevin Dineen, and Ulf Samuelsson.

I added up all the players who ammassed over 800 PIM and the entire class of '83 spent 35,962 minutes collectively in the box. Just wow.

The class of '82 beat out the after year with a total of 38,016 PIM.

1979 wins. Twelve 1000+ PIM 1st rounders alone, 4 of them being 2000+ PIM guys. I think 22 total for the draft but that 1st round has to be the toughest draft round ever. Two 3000+ PIM Hunters.

Them were rough and tumble days.
