Dave Nonis, Senior Vice-President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the hockey club has acquired defenceman Kevin Marshall from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Nicolas Deschamps (day-SHAWMP). Marshall will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Marshall, 24, played in 52 games with the AHL’s Hershey Bears this season, registering a goal and four assists for five points with 77 penalty minutes and a plus-five (+5) rating. The 6-1,

201-pound native of Boucherville, Quebec, was originally drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round, 41st overall, in the 2007 Entry Draft. Marshall has played 10 career NHL games, all with the Flyers in 2011-12, posting eight penalty minutes

Meh. I was never a Deschamps fan. I'm indifferent to this trade.

2011-12: Marshall made his NHL debut with the Flyers at the end of November — one of several young defensemen pressed into service by Philadelphia due to a rash of injuries. He skated in ten games for the Flyers and was minus-one with 8 penalty minutes; averaging 8:45 minutes of ice time. Marshall spent most of the season in the AHL, first with Flyers' affiliate Adirondack and then Caps' affiliate Hershey after being optioned in a February 2012 trade. In 63 AHL games between the two clubs he was minus-six with 2 goals and 4 assists; amassing 116 penalty minutes. In the Bears' first round playoff series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre he was an even plus/minus with 2 assists and 10 penalty minutes in five games. Marshall was re-signed as a restricted free agent to a one-year contract by the Capitals in July, 2012.

Marshall is regarded as a hard-working, stay-at-home defenseman who plays with a physical edge. He skates very well, has excellent balance and moves the puck efficiently.

2011-12: Deschamps began the year with Anaheim AHL affiliate Syracuse and was acquired by the Toronto organization in January 2012 in exchange for Luca Caputi. The move seemed to spark Deschamps offensively as he had an increased role with the AHL's Toronto Marlies. After scoring 5 goals with 2 assists in 31 games for Syracuse, he scored 7 goals with 23 assists and was plus-13 with 14 penalty minutes in 40 games for the North Division champions. Deschamps was one of the Marlies' top forwards in their playoff run to the AHL finals; scoring 3 goals with 9 assists and finishing plus-five with 8 penalty minutes.


Talent Analysis

A scoring forward with a bevy of offensive skills, Deschamps creates chances with his speed and ability to make plays at high speed. Effective at both ends of the ice, his soft hands and quick release make him a dangerous attacker, but his lack of strength and absence of gritty play at times limits his usefulness and leads to bouts of inconsistency.

Plus they'll be losing Gardiner very soon to the big club so his spot on the roster has to be filled.

Maybe but even with Gardiner the Marlies needed some D help after losing Kostka, Holzer and Fraser.

Also Deschamps took a step back this year after showing some promise in last year's playoffs.
