Smart move. Adds much more mobility and offense on the back end. Abbott has never gotten back that production he had last year, losing Brennan's shot on the pp really hurt him.

We are trading D soon....it is the only thing that makes sense....we would need a D man to move up and one to take his place.

Polak is on the move is my guess....

Yup & maybe more. I'm optimistic not sure who or how many though.

Brennan was probably gonna walk this summer as he wasn't gonna get a chance to play with the big club. They got back a cheap pending RFA in Abbott back.

Good move. Brennan is a fantastic AHL player - and likely deserved a shot a couple seasons ago when he was with the marlies.

Abbot wasn't going to make it in the NHL.

I was pushing hard for the Marlies to get an OFD. They needed it badly. Percy and Loov are OK in that department but it's not their strength. Brennan is one of the best in the AHL for that.

Abbott had a rough season this year. He's a great AHL player but he's never going to be a NHL player, undersized average skater and not overly strong on the puck.

This is a full on Marlies move. Marlies were hurting without Brennan. It's going to boost the powerplay, breakouts and the offense as a whole.

Completely overshadowed by the Clarkson trade, but this is a good move, IMO. The Leafs added the AHL equivalent of a Norris Trophy winner for a forward who is in what is suddenly a well stocked category in the Leafs system, a small, skilled forward. Nylander, Brown and Leipsic are all ahead of Abbott in that category, along with Kozun.

And who knows? Maybe the Leafs trade another defender and Brennan gets a chance as a bottom pairing power play specialist defenseman.

You know what's really rich? I don't know if anyone pointed this out yet: TJ Brennan is a RFA this year (by July 1st when his contract expires, he's still 26 years old) and Spencer Abbott is actually a UFA. LOL.

So the Leafs, believe it or not, have the right to keep TJ Brennan so as long as they submit a qualifying offer. But I think TJ Brennan was a RFA last year too and the Leafs decided to let him go instead of giving him a qualifying order (what a complete waste of assets IMO. TJ Brennan could be playing in the NHL somewhere so he's worth *at least* a late round draft pick in terms of value. Makes no sense to let that asset go for free.) He could even maybe make the Leafs top 6 when injuries hit (not now). Leafs have Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly, Polak and Robidas. Brennan would have to fight with Holzer, Granberg and Percy for the #6 spot. And quite frankly, Holzer is performing better than Robidas at this point. Only reason why Robidas is a lock for the top 6 is because he has a $3 million/year contract. So $2,075,000 of Robidas' contract would count towards the cap if he was buried in the minors.

Problem is, he has more potential to put up points playing as a forward, because he has no idea how to be a dman
I'm not really sure why this reputation still holds up. He's never been a great defensive player but he improved quite a bit in that respect during his last season with the Marlies. He'd have his Gardiner/Franson-esque moments but from what I saw that year, he wasn't really a liability on the ice for the most part.

I always liked T.J. Brennan and wished the Leafs gave him a better shot last time around. Good to see him back.
