I know that HOH has been using top twenty (or ten, or five, etc) stats less frequently over the past few years, largely because superior metrics (like "VsX") now exist. Still, I think there's some value in assembling this information in one place.

A few points to keep in mind:
- This only focuses on regular season offense. Playoff performance, defense, physical play, awards & nominations and historical importance are all key when ranking players. Don't use these numbers in isolation.
- This metric heavily rewards longevity (note that Delvecchio is a single point behind Gretzky in assists). Still, the data can easily be filtered for top tens, top fives, etc.
- Every player with at least five top 20 seasons is included in each table.
- I think I properly accounted for ties but it's sometimes tricky in Excel. Let me know if you see any errors.

This "junk" statistic works by awarding 4 points for a top five finish, 3 points for a top ten finish, 2 points for a top fifteen finish, and 1 point for a top twenty finish. For example, Larmer finished 10th in goals in 1985 (3 points), 11th in 1991 (2 points), 16th in 1989 (1 point) and 17th in 1983 (1 point). His "score" is 7 points. As I've tried to emphasize by calling it "junk", this metric has no inherent meaning, but I thought it might be interesting. Attribution - I believe @seventieslord invented this.

Despite 2017 being a disappointing season, Ovechkin is now tied for 5th place all-time. He's one decent season away from surpassing Esposito amongst all post-expansion players.

With his improbable goal-scoring crown this year, Crosby becomes one of two players in history to lead the league in goals twice, and never again placing in the top five. Doug Bentley was the other.

I was surprised to see Bathgate rank so high. I always viewed him as much more of a playmaker than a goal-scorer. On the other hand, Sakic ranked quite a bit lower than I expected.

Keep in mind that this statistic doesn't fully capture outlier performances. Thus, Gretzky leading the league in scoring, solely on the strength of his assists, is treated the same as a 5th place finish. There's no question that he's the greatest playmaker of all time.

I wasn't surprised to see Oates and Thornton tied, but I didn't expect Delvecchio to be so close behind them.

After 2017, the perpetually underrated Backstrom moves into a tie for 25th place (tying Crosby). Getzlaf is just one "point" behind them.

Ovechkin barely snuck into the top twenty in scoring in 2017. He gets one extra point and moves into a tie for 19th place. Crosby, with a second-place finish, leaps ahead of him into a tie for 16th place.

How about Gordie Howe? No player in history played at a high level for such a long period of time. To quote myself from another thread, he almost makes Ray Bourque seem like a flash in the pan.

Always look forward to seeing Hockey Outsiders updated stats at the end of the season. Will be interesting to see how long it takes for McDavid to work his way up some of these charts.

This thread has been updated after the data migration on HFBoards. In my browser, some of the tables are too wide and you need to scroll to be able to see the end - not sure if there's a way to fix that. Other than that, let me know if you see any errors/problems.

In terms of scoring points...
  • Howe 20 times top-5 (well pimped fact) yet Gretzky... 15 times top-3
  • Bucyk is 14 times top 15? Oh, but only once top-6.
  • Stan Mikita 8 times top-3 (4 of them 1st) but Rocket Richard was never 1st and only 7 times top-3.
  • Sittler and Goulet only once top-7
Interesting...

I was going to update this thread for 2018 but I think the way I presented the data last year was pretty cluttered, and probably not overly meaningful (ie comparing top twenty finishes from 2017 to 1927). Does anyone have any suggestions on a better way to present and/or organize the data?

I don't like your awarding of points. 4 for top 5, 3 for 6-10, etc.

Why not do 20 points for first place finish.
19 points for 2nd place finish
....
1 point for 20th finish.

That would be more representative i think. As it is it just seems to reward longevity more than anything, doesn't really reward eliteness as much.

So if player 20 times 20th it is the same as once 1st?

Yes.

Under current calculations -

someone who won 5 art rosses and has 15 seasons finishing 21st or more in points is worth the same as someone who finished 20th 20 times.

A less extreme example - for points look how much higher Hawerchuk places than Lafleur.

In the latest all time ranking on this forum, Lafleur placed 19th all time. Largely on his offensive contributions.
Hawerchuk wasn't in the top 70.

I think finishing high counts for a lot more than finishing lower does. If you don't want to do exactly 20 points for 1st and 1 point for 20th - it should still be a lot closer to that than what it currently is to be more representative of player's domination.

I've updated this thread for the first time in a few years. The first three posts, although still containing a lot of information, are hopefully easier to read now.

The goal-scoring junk stat now has Ovechkin in 3rd place all-time (just barely behind Richard).

Crosby is now tied for 8th in the points junk stat.

I'm really surprised to see that, two seasons ago already, Crosby tied Lemieux and Esposito for most seasons top-3 in points with eight. Only Gretzky (15) and Howe (12) have more.

This thread has been updated for the (shortened) 2020 season. As usual, I've done some validation checks, but let me know if anything looks off.

Ovechkin now sits in 2nd place all-time according to the goal-scoring junk statistic.

In the points junk statistic, Ovechkin broke his tie with Andy Bathgate and now has sole possession of 14th place. Malkin and Kane are now tied for 41st, and Stamkos is now tied for 45th. McDavid is tied for 91st and rising quickly.

This entire thread has been updated for 2021. I've done a fair amount of spot-checking, but let me know if anything looks incorrect.

No, I'm not suggesting that a 20th place finish from 1927 is as tough or as impressive as a 20th place finish from 2021. But I've found there's hardly any information online about scoring finishes past 10th place, so why not compile everything in one spot?

Crosby finished 10th in scoring in 2021. It was his 12th time finish in the top ten. Only two players - Howe and Gretzky - have more top ten finishes (tied with Beliveau).

It's been six years since Ovechkin placed in the top ten in scoring. But since then, he's had point finishes of 11th, 15th, 15th, 18th and 20th (something that hockey-reference.com and similar sites don't tell you). Ovechkin now has the 7th most seasons in the top twenty in scoring (among post-expansion players, only Gretzky and Dionne have more).

I don't take the "junk" stat too seriously, but Crosby currently ranks 6th all-time. It's conceivable that he could finish his career 3rd behind only Howe and Gretzky. (So can Ovechkin, but that's less likely).

Kane snuck into the top 30 in the junk stat for points - passing Trottier, Francis and Oates, tied with Yzerman and Geoffrion, and within striking distance of Messier, Selanne and Thornton.

The junk stat rewards dominance, and McDavid is flying up the chart. I don't mean that he's shot past players like Gartner, Andreychuk and Ciccarelli (that's obvious). But he's already surpassed Schmidt, Hull, Kariya, Bure and Modano - incredible.

As I've noted in other threads, Connor McDavid is now one of three players in NHL history who's been 1st or 2nd in scoring six years in a row. Wayne Gretzky and Phil Esposito are the only others to do that. McDavid's in pretty good company (and he's still only 25).

Ovechkin finished in the top 20 in goal-scoring for the 17th time in his career. (He's an arbitrary but impressive accomplishment - he's now finished 4th or higher in goals 13 times, which is more than anybody else in NHL history, including Gordie Howe). He also had his 15th season finishing in the top twenty in scoring (more than anyone post-expansion except Wayne Gretzky and Marcel Dionne).

Maybe the "junk" statistic could be like this:

1st place = 10 pts
2nd place = 8 pts
3rd place = 6 pts
4th/5th = 5 pts
6th to 10th = 4pts
11th to 15th = 3pts
16th to 20th = 2 pts

I agree that 20 points for 1st and 1 point for 20th is far too extreme, so this system corrects that, somewhat.

Not a bad idea. I'm not going to spend too much time on something that (almost by definition) doesn't have much inherent meaning, but here's the top 20 in points:

Not to toot my own horn, but I would have guessed either Thornton or Oates as my #3 here for assists (and I would have been right). Combo of durability + longevity + really unbalanced players. Maybe I've played with metrics like this for too long. Phil Esposito on the assists table surprises me at first, then I realize it shouldn't.

Frank Mahovlich surprises me a little on the goals table, but I guess it shows the value of longevity + durability in metrics like these

Actually, the most surprising part of these tables to me is Gretzky's "low" ranking in goals. Goes to show that his time as a leading goal scorer wasn't actually that great. Also shows that this metric doesn't take into account margins of victory.
