His WJC showing was a bit disappointing - he wasn’t bad, was pretty steady defensively and brought some physicality, but I was expecting him to dominate offensively, and he didn’t do much.

On the flip side, he’s been having a better-than-expected season in the AHL. Interestingly, he’s quite a bit more aggressive offensively in the AHL - you’d expect him to take more chances against teenagers than men, but it was the total opposite.

I do have high hopes for him, and think he’s having a strong year overall, but we shouldn’t pretend he had a strong tourney, it was pretty “meh.”

Under 19 D in the AHL since the 1994-95 lockout
By game 20 if he registers a point in each of his next two games, he could be tied for the 2nd highest point total of any U19 D in the AHL since the 1994-95 lockout (23 years). His PPG is much higher than those ahead of him.

Right now he is 10th in PPG among all forwards and defensemen and 1st among D since the 1994-95 lockout.

He was pretty good when it mattered, basically the opposite of Brannstrom who started off hot and cooled significantly.

He wasn't expected to be the top dog, and didnt play like it either. 10pts in 18 games as one of the youngest players by 2+ years....Liljegren has at least shown he should have gone much sooner than he did at the draft. Im still surprised he slipped past both Buffalo AND Detroit...though Buffalo made a solid pick IMHO. Detroit with Logan Brown 2.0..meh!

Honestly who cares where he should've gone. If he went earlier, Leafs wouldn't have him and we'd just be envious of which ever team would end up taking him.

I'm super glad he's ours and even if he turns into a 30 point 2 way bottom 4 guy, thats a huge win for Hunter and our club.

Liljegren and Brannstrom have both been left off Sweden’s WJCSS summer camp roster.

I’m a little disappointed, but the decision makes sense. Both are guaranteed locks for the WJC if not in the NHL by December, and both will have a short summer due to AHL playoffs (or international games for Brannstrom).

Liljegren’s summer is better spent adding some size in the gym, skating, and getting ready for training camp in September rather than lighting up a tournament in late July (again).

Now tied for 2nd highest scoring U19 D since the 1993-94 lockout.

Add Victor Uchevatov’s 2002 season at #6 and you have all six of the 18 year olds who played 40 or more AHL games at age 18. All 6 were 1st or 2nd round picks. Liljegren finished first in PPG and second in total points out of all 18 year old AHL players.

Should be pushing hard to make the decision a tough one at next seasons camp. Invaluable experience with a Calder Cup on his resume now, a summer to build on, I hope he is the last cut at camp. He needs to dominate offensively on the Marlies next season in his development, but I would be a little disappointed if this board isn't gushing about him in October.
