Things NHL players do with equipment

Just though we could start a list of some odd things some NHL guys do with equipment. I put this in "The Rink" because people in here probably have more interest in equipment kind of things.

-Dany Heatleys huge shin guards.

also, Heatley's huge visor which cannot be seen in that picture.

-Ilya Kovalchuks big shoulder pads. Which is getting to be the norm. considering how big some guys shoulder pads are getting, they should put restrictions on them.

And even though I love the guy, Chris Neil's face makes his helmet look like its 2 sizes too small.

I saw a pre-game/locker room clip of the Ducks the other night. It looks like Niedermayer's shoulder pads are from Jr's. I think i saw a hefty amount of duct tape on the shoulder caps.

I apologize if this if a little off topic, but speaking of equipment, are you aware that Teppo Numminen owns 90% of Montreal Sports Ltd?

I have no real proof, but from clips I've seen, a lot of NHLers go for really old and small shoulder pads that they probably did indeed wear in juniors.

Cept his were realllly nasty, looked tiny on him, and the caps were all replaced--like he sew some plastic on there. Couldn't find the pic.

Saw a pic of Brodeur's new c/a...can't find that pic either. But it doesn't look to be much of an improvment over the one in that pic. Same white color...almost same design. Had very little protection but huge arm pads. I can't believe pros, they don't really go for protection.

I believe I read somewhere that Yan Stastny uses his dad's equipment from his playing days in the NHL, wooden stick, shoulder pads etc.

Cutting pants and leaving zippers unzipped was illegal or so I thought.

Back on topic...guys with their mouthguards hanging all outta their mouth like Drury.

Ive never seen a ref call a penalty for the pants being cut or unzipped. I always had mine unzipped or cut about halfway and never got called. Mouthguards ive seen them do though

How about Chris Pronger's size 7 skates?

I'm 5'9" and I wear a size 9 1/2.

On shoulder pads, Marty McSorley just sewed shoulder caps onto his suspenders I believe.

Matt Schneider has some pretty thick PVC caps sewn onto the ankles of his skates to protect from shots. A guy that comes into our shop is good friends with him and gets all his equiptment.

Hockey is one of the few sports where dudes really love wearing old *** equipment. Same thing in rec leagues...the older your gear, the higher your chances are that you are really good.
