Soderberg for 3C and find a good defensive 4C. Also why break up Crosby/Jake? Jake is not going to play C unless we are desperate. He's also the best winger Crosby has had in his career chemistry wise, why break that up? that should be the last thing we break up.

Having Guentzel as a C and away from Sid would be a huge waste of his talents.
In what way?
In that it would return Guentzel to his natural position that he's played exclusively until the last two years?
In that it would return Sheary to the Left Wing where he looked more comfortable during the 16 Cup run?
In that it would give Guentzel the opportunity to still play with very high-end talent?
In that it has the potential to spread scoring around in such a balanced way that matchups would be a nightmare for the opposition?

Aside from Duchene, Guentzel is a smarter, far more dynamic player than any other player suggested so far for the 3C role.

Trying it for a handful of games wouldn't hurt in the least.

Carl Soderberg is a healthy scratch for the Colorado Avalanche and carries a $4.7M cap hit.

4.75m cap hit. Which is irrelevant as we wouldn't even consider him unless Colorado was retaining a good chunk of that.

Sodo and his coach have been on the outs for a year now. Him getting HS'd doesn't bother me all that much. Again, this is a guy that put up between 44 and 51 points in 3 straight years before a coaching change happened in COL that resulted in the team being one of the worst we've seen in years and Sodo himself having a disastrous season that resulted with him spending much of his year on the 4th line, playing for a coach that didn't like him.

He didn't suddenly forget how to play hockey at a pro level.

One name I don't hear about as a possible 3C option is Mikael Backlund. I know nothing about his skating but he has both offensive and defensive skills and he's a UFA at the end of the year. Could he be a possible trade candidate in-season? Calgary has good center depth

Not likely. Calgary is going to want to see a lot more out of Bennett at C before they even consider trading their #2C. And even then, odds are they're going to be trying very hard to re-sign him. If he hits FA, he's going to get 5m+. Even if they can't re-sign him, they're trying to have playoff success. I don't think you'll see him trade their #2C without at the very least getting another quality C in return.

Think of him as a much better version of Cole or Hornqvist. And then ask yourself if you'd trade one of those guys for some futures.

But they have Jankowski up and coming. If Bennett plays well and he gets some games and plays well, it might be worth moving Backlund for a first. Because even if he and the team wants to re-sign him, all Backlund has to do is finish the year with a new team and re-sign with Calgary on July 1. And Calgary will get him back plus have an extra first. Win-win for them

Calgary was a playoff team and wont be selling major pieces even if they are UFAs till they either have a big need or if their season crashes and burns

The one silver lining is that McKegg looks like he could be a really awesome 4th line center. Ton of energy, speed, slays the faceoff dot, and can generate some offense.

Agreed. I’ve been very surprised by his play with the puck, including his passing. He’s not skilled but he knows what to do with it.

The Pens dont have the assets to pry him out. And he will be in the 5mil range for his new contract. Guentzel would have to be going the other way. And before people start freaking out that I mention him as the cost, I live in Calgary and see Backlund play regularly. Hes that good, hes what most teams want in a 2nd line center.

Not at this point, not unless the Flames are out of it and they don't think he'll resign.

Even then I dont see the Pens having the assets. Draft picks wont interest them. It would have to be Sprong with something else or Guentzel.

3C search obviously continues but this is what i got from Capfriendly for:

-waived Niemi + Kuhn.

Jake-Sid-Horny
Zaripov(1.5)-G-Phil
Hags-McKegg-Rust
Sheary-Rowney-Archibald
Wilson
Reaves

Dumo-Tang
Cole-Schultz
Maatta-Hunwick
Ruh

Murr
Jarry

='s 1.824167M in space
New 3C with McKegg out gives 2.474167M for 3C space with Archie still here. Add him and it's 3.149167M in space for a 3C.

ETA: And if you don't want/need Zari then bring up which ever WBS kid who looks ready for the jump.

Yes because everyone all said that it's not an issue until the trade deadline. Seriously, give it the f*** up already, and stop twisting people's words. :shakeshead

Good luck getting a 2C. Backlund is Calgarys most important player. He's too valuable at being a shutdown centre come playoffs. Hes selke lite, and he's good for 45-50 points.

I wonder how long JRs patience will be. Not that we would have som last night even if Duchene were our 3c. But a trade will also be a wakeup call.

Problem is, if we continue to play poor, every GM will know JR has to do something, and the prices will be sky high.

We were playing like crap when JR pulled off the Daley for Scuderi deal.

Have a little faith in our stud GM.
