Canucks need a Right Shot PP Dman in 1st round
but one more LW with size, skill and grit - love Jackson Leppard of the Prince George Cougars he is from North Vancouver I would be thrilled to get him in the 2nd or 3rd round

Throw positional needs right out the damn door. This is how you end up with Juolevi. This is how you end up with Bourdon. This is how you end up with a less valuable player.

To follow up on Gadjovich, we didn't see him in the third, and he didn't come out on the ice when announced as the first star. Somebody at the rink commented he went off after an awkward hit, but I didn't see it. Might be injured.

I think Gadjovich and Lind are going to be really good players and are examples of why you should never give up 2nd round picks lightly. Lind is looking like an extra first rounder (and many analysts had him late in the first IIRC). With Boeser, Virtanen, Goldobin, Dahlen, Lind, Gadjovich and Lockwood, the future of our wingers looks pretty good. At C , after Horvat, the future is Pettersson, Gaunce and Gaudette - not quite as impressive. Granlund and Burmistrov are young enough to be in the picture as well, Cassels has a lot to prove at this point.

I don't believe in "tanking" - rebuilds are based on 2nd round picks. Lottery picks are a crap shoot. As we have seen in the last 2 years, finishing in the bottom 3 or 5 can leave you picking 5th or 6th. But multiple picks in the 2nd round are fungible; they are the currency of team building. However I do believe that it is necessary to honestly assess where the team is prior to the TDL (early Jan) and if you are out of the playoff picture, you should be looking to the future.

Regardless of the outstanding effort and result last night, this team is probably not going to be in the playoff picture at the TDL. If we can trade Vanek and one of the extra defensemen (Gudbransson, MDZ, Pouliot, Wiercioch) and maybe even Gaunce or Burmistrov if they don't fit and pick up additional 2nd and 3rd round picks, regardless of winning the draft lottery, we will have an outstanding prospect pool and be positioned to compete as early as next season.

BTW - this is not praise for Benning's strategy - but he has done very well at drafting, particularly in the late 1st through 4th rounds. I don't have a lot of confidence in his execution. He seems to prefer acquiring prospects over picks - Goldobin, Dahlen, Baertschi, Granlund, Pouliot, Vey, etc.

Was there not some discussion that there was a need to fill a prospect gap at certain age and experience levels as part of his strategy? Not heavily advocating for it, but there is some logic behind it.

That was the explanation at the time of the Baertschi, Granlund and Clendening (acquisition) trades. The Goldobin and Dahlen trades and signings of Stetcher, Chatfield, Molino, and the Pouliot trade were of the same vein. There is some logic to it, but the "gap" is pretty much closed now as we have decent quality prospects of all ages between 18 and 24.

The "gap" was real and was caused by the abysmal drafting of the Gillis era.

I hope going forward Benning favours picks over prospects at the TDL.

7 games in, DiPietro is sitting at a 1.88 GAA .942 SV%. Highest in the OHL out of regulars.

Also, he's faced the 2nd most shots in the OHL.

Everybody talking about Lind's and Gadjovich's starts. But DiPietro's is having an insane start of the season.

Meh that strategy of age gap hasn't really worked imo as the guys we got could have been had on waivers anyway.

However back to our current prospects: I loved the Dipietro pick and see him as a stud goalie with his biggest issue being his lack of "ideal" size for goalies nowdays

Yep. It is so incredibly rare that a team truly has too many young players at a position. Certainly ones with NHL potential and future. Teams make room for NHL ready talent and move out veterans. Kids that don't cut it are usually the Linden Vey's of the world and they can't cut it anywhere. Usually.

Take best player available and then if you truly have an overabundance of 20 year old future top 6 forwards or top 4 D-men look to re-shuffle things. That never really happens though. Buy the time the kids are 20/21 most have busted. And not only that your team needs have changed so by the time the kids are ready to contribute you no longer have the need you thought you did a few years prior. You still make room for that player of course by moving out a vet.

So Dahlen is heading back to Timra, the same team he played for last season in the Allsvenskan, Sweden's version of the AHL...kind of disappointing really that they couldn't place him with a team in the top-tier SHL....can't help but think that he'd have been a lot better off in the AHL.....but just goes to show that for all the hype Dahlen and Goldobin got at last year's trade deadline, their arrival as legitimate NHL players is still pretty uncertain.

Note the clause on his contract, he could be back to us in Jan.

Palmu is an instant impact player against men after moving up levels. Time to start considering this guy a legitimate prospect.
How can you not be pulling for this kid?.....all kinds of natural skill and if he was 6 feet instead of 5'6" he'd be on top of the Canuck prospect pool....but if there's anyone who can make it at that size it has to be Palmu.....really wish they'd been able to get him to Utica this year.
