Seems like the Oilers don't really care about that pick. It's not like they have a shot to the PO or something, why even play Montoya? Call up someone from the AHL and keep your pick...

Well yeah, I'm pretty sure GMs don't care much about 4th and 5th round picks. These get traded all the time or included as conditions in a trade. After that, the GM just let the coach ice the best possible team with what he's given. Doing otherwise would be stupid.

Habs officially get Oilers' 4th. Montoya played at least 30 minutes against Tampa today, meeting the condition of 7 regular season games played of at least 30 minutes.

That’s a good trade. If Price was healthy I’m sure they could have grabbed another 4th or 5th the way Niemi was playing. At the very least he should get a contract as a backup somewhere this summer. Good for him.

Isn't that graphic wrong? we traded our 7th to Philadelphia last year, no?

On CapFriendly, whenever a pick is traded, the logo becomes faded. This year's 6th round and 7th round picks are faded in that graphic indicating they no longer belong to the Habs. However, they're still left there so people can click on it to see the details of the trade. Habs 6th was sent to Wings for Ott and Habs' 2018 7th was sent to Philly for their 2017 7th (Primeau).

That trade with Philly is looking good early. Primeau had a great year.

Blind squirrel, broken clock...and all that ;)

Nice thing about 6th and 7th picks too is that they are relatively quite easy to obtain if Timmins sees someone he likes like with Primeau. The draft is going to quite fun to watch this year with all the picks.

Now that we have the 4th locked with Montoya, how likely is the LA 4th? What's their magic number? Thanks in advance.

I believe the goal is 97 points.

It's a really tight race. While LA wins, some teams need to lose or else it may go down on the final day of the season. The good news is that Calgary has kind of fallen back a bit having lost 3 in a row. They're now 6 points behind and have played 74 games to Kings' 73.

It's Anaheim that LA have to most worry about. Both are tied at 86 points and both have played 73 games. However, LA holds the advantage with 40 wins to Ducks' 37. And also, LA have 38 ROW to Ducks' 33. Before LA's win against the Wild last night, they were in a Wild Card spot and Anaheim 3rd in the Pacific. After LA finally won, they moved to 3rd. Next time Anaheim plays and wins, they might knock Kings off that 3rd spot. It changes daily.

Sharks are 2nd in the Division and up by 3 points and a game in hand on LA. So that's not unattainable for LA. Though San Jose has held that 2nd spot for a long time.

This is why LA needs to also keep an eye out on the Wild Card race. Dallas, Colorado, and St. Louis also have to lose so in case LA does get knocked off the Top-3 of the Division, they need to be ahead of at least 2 of them to ensure they have a Wild Card spot.

Two drafts in a row, Habs traded the following year's 7th round pick to have one in the current draft.

In 2016, they traded their 2017 7th to Winnipeg for their 2016 7th in order to select Arvid Henrikson.
In 2017, they traded their 2018 7th to Philly for their 2017 7th in order to select Cayden Primeau.

Kings have the 2nd best GAA in the league, with a healthy Carter boosting their offence I'd say the extra 4th rounder is a lock

We are either getting our own 4th round pick or LA's 5th round pick.
So a high 4th or late 5th.

The 5th will not be late since the only way we get it is if LA Kings does not make the playoffs, so it's still in the top half of the 5th round.

Early 4th is Likely a top 100 pick. I can see us making trades with all those picks

As things stand at this moment, it will be Pick #99. And the Oilers 4th is #100. So if things remain in tact, Habs will have 8 picks in the Top-100. But from now until the end of the season, things can change depending on where Habs and Edmonton finish in the general standings. One or both picks may end up outside the Top-100.
