Here's how the (my) leafs stats look so far.
Remember that it's still too early to mean too much. And the insanity that is our first line so far is kinda screwing with all the team-relative stats.
What I'm looking at mostly here is usage - we can see that despite starting the season with almost fully even line-rolling, babcock is already starting to stratify playing time based on performance.
Legend:
Letter Grades = Quality of Competition measured by opponents' time on ice, Converted into Letter Grades for simplicity
p60 = points per 60 minutes
xGF% = Expected Goals For Percentage (i.e. shot attempt percentage adjusted for shot quality) - this stat is already adjusted for zone deployment and game score
rel = xgf% relative to team - also already adjusted for zone and score
Matthews (20): 7gms, ES 14:55 (A+), 4.42p60, 65.7xgf% (+12.7rel) / PP 2:48, 6.12p60 / SH 0:03
Nylander (21): 7gms, ES 14:43 (A+), 2.51p60, 61.2xgf% (+5.7rel) / PP 2:40, 6.42p60 / SH 0:00
Hyman (25): 7gms, ES 13:23 (A+), 2.83p60, 66.0xgf% (+12.5rel) / PP 0:15, 0.00p60 / SH 3:31
This is really insane. They're getting the toughest competition possible, but dominating more than any other line in hockey. I don't really know what to say here - Matthews and Willy are craycray, and I have to eat crow on Hyman because when a line does this well he has to be a big part of it. And Hyman is racking up the points too.
As far as usage goes, we're finally seeing them start to get legit 1st line minutes at even strength, more than they started the year with.
Kadri (27): 7gms, ES 13:15 (A), 2.80p60, 54.0xgf% (-5.6rel) / PP 2:59, 8.58p60 / SH 0:01
Marleau (38): 7gms, ES 13:08 (A), 2.11p60, 54.7xgf% (-4.8rel) / PP 2:45, 6.22p60 / SH 0:55
Komarov (31): 7gms, ES 11:39 (A), 0.00p60, 58.0xgf% (-0.9rel) / PP 0:37, 27.27p60 / SH 3:13
The 2nd line is also getting very tough usage, and are doing damn well in it...but the insane 1st line is making those relative numbers look bad.
Their minutes are starting to increase as well, like the top line's.
Bozak (31): 7gms, ES 11:32 (C), 1.59p60, 52.7xgf% (-7.3rel) / PP 3:04, 8.38p60 / SH 0:02
VanRyk (28): 7gms, ES 11:06 (C), 2.48p60, 60.4xgf% (+2.7rel) / PP 3:06, 11.02p60 / SH 0:01
Marner (20): 7gms, ES 11:27 (D+), 0.80p60, 54.9xgf% (-4.1rel) / PP 3:12, 5.34p60 / SH 0:18
Brown (23): 7gms, ES 8:54 (C-), 4.17p60, 57.0xgf% (-1.5rel) / PP 1:59, 0.00p60 / SH 3:25
The 3rd line as we can see has had their usage plummet, both in time on ice and quality of competition. To JVR's credit, he's taking advantage of the easy ice time and really playing well. But Bozak and Marner have been disastrous, while Brown has been a clear upgrade over Marner.
But really, F Bozak.
Moore (37): 3gms, ES 9:17 (D), 4.48p60, 50.3xgf% (-13.0rel) / PP 0:13, 0.00p60 / SH 2:35
Fehr (32): 4gms, ES 7:10 (F), 0.00p60, 54.2xgf% (+0.1rel) / PP 0:03, 0.00p60 / SH 3:42
Martin (28): 7gms, ES 7:52 (F), 1.18p60, 40.6xgf% (-20.4rel) / PP 0:03, 0.00p60 / SH 0:00
And now we see the other benefit of Babs playing the best lines more - the scrubs get the least and easiest minutes possible. Even then, of course, Martin really really sucks.
Zaitsev (26): 7gms, ES 17:30 (A), 2.68p60, 63.9xgf% (+8.7rel) / PP 0:10, 0.00p60 / SH 5:18
Gardiner (27): 7gms, ES 17:56 (A), 1.03p60, 60.1xgf% (+2.8rel) / PP 2:54, 2.95p60 / SH 0:40
Rielly (23): 7gms, ES 16:18 (A), 1.15p60, 55.3xgf%, (-4.5rel) / PP 2:55, 11.75p60 / SH 1:46
Hainsey (36): 7gms, ES 15:44 (A), 2.44p60, 58.0xgf% (-0.1rel) / PP 0:06, 0.00p60 / SH 6:02
The top-4 is really rounding into form. All of them are playing comparable top competition, though the Jake/zaits pair is getting more minutes, which is partly due to mo/ron getting more special teams minutes, but also due to them playing really, really well. Rielly/Hainsey have been good too but not as good.
Carrick (23): 5gms, ES 13:54 (D-), 0.92p60, 59.4xgf% (+5.5rel) / PP 0:05, 0.00p60 / SH 0:03
Borgman (22): 5gms, ES 13:24 (F), 0.95p60, 53.7xgf% (-2.7rel) / PP 0:03, 0.00p60 / SH 1:16
Rosen (23): 4gms, ES 12:21 (D+), 1.22p60, 47.1xgf% (-21.4rel) / PP 0:25, 0.00p60 / SH 0:00
And finally we are using a 3rd pair like a 3rd pair should be used. Tiny minutes, and buttersoft competition. Carrick has thrived in this usage, while the 2 rooks have been up and down.
Andersen (28): 6gms, .899sv%, +0.0gsaa / ES .898es%, -1.2gsaa / PK .884sv%, +0.1gsaa
McElhinney (34): 1gms, .909sv%, -0.2gsaa / ES .906es%, -0.4gsaa / PK 1.000sv%, +0.2gsaa
pick it up, freddy.
Looking over all those numbers, the one change I might be interested in seeing is JVR swap with Leo. That would really turn the Kadri line into a dominant offensive line, while giving some balls to the 3rd line.
