4 points separate 1st to 6th in the metro.

Who takes the top 3 spots?

I don't know how much of this is an aberration. For example, NYI have played 14/30 games so far against the Western Conference. Divisional play really heats up in January.

It's unbelievable, and a big reason why I hate the new playoff format. There was nothing wrong with the division leaders taking the top 3 spots and the final 5 battling it out between the whole conference.

1 or 2 teams/fanbases are going to be fuming because there's a good chance they'll miss out on a spot that could have been there's.

Carolina and Philly are also damn good teams.

True story. Both teams are .500 (point%) with 29 points in 29 games.

That means no team is below the .500 line. And with 3 games in hand over Pittsburgh, Carolina and Philly could both potentially reach the same points (35 in 32) as the Pens.

its nice to see another division turning in to it own thunderdome! Makes for an amazing regular season but a nail biting lead up to the playoffs. hard to keep players healthy whilst in the THUNDERDOME!!!

Maybe I missed something but under the current system one of those six teams will miss the playoffs but under the old system one of those teams would also miss the playoffs. So in reality you're complaining that the Penguins are not good enough to make the playoffs under either system.

Good teams miss the playoffs every year and its not because of the seedings. Suck it up metro fans and welcome to a league of parity.

...and the top 4 teams in the METRO are either .500 or have a winning record vs. the Central this year.

CLB 3-3
NYI 3-2-1
WAS 2-2
NJD 4-2

Ok? Here’s all of the Central teams record against the Metro.
Blues 6-2
Preds 5-4
Jets 4-3
Stars 3-1
Blackhawks 6-3
Wild 4-4
Avalanche 5-3

So that argument doesn’t work. Nashville post-Turris is 3-1. Both are blood bath divisions. Could be here all night debating between the two.

In the old system, only the best team from each division got a top-seed playoff spot, the rest went by entire conference. If we went by the old system you'd have:

1. Tampa Bay (Atlantic)
2. Columbus (Metro)
3. Toronto
4. NYI
5. Washington
6. NJ
7. Rangers
8. Penguins

In this scenario, Boston would be on the outside.

(In the old divisions, the top-3 spots would go to TB, TOR, and NYI - as Columbus was in the West back then. Put them in any division and Boston would still be the one kicked from the playoffs)

Since winning or losing in OT or the SO isn't really indicative of how good a team is or isn't, it's better to look at regulation records.

NYI, 13-10-7
NJ, 11-9-9
Was, 14-12-5
NYR, 12-11-7
Clb, 11-10-9
Phi, 10-11-8
Pit, 10-13-9
Car, 8-11-10

So 3 teams under the real .500 mark.

Which isn't why the format was changed.

What people say is a super close division race is really just the former top teams of Pit and WSH being weaker due to the cap while no one outside of Columbus is ready to take their place.
