Their win vs. Pittsburgh was their 10th straight on home ice, a new all-time team record.

I find it kinda hard to believe to think that no Leafs team ever until now had won 10 straight home wins.

Even in the 30s, 40s, 60s, mid-90s, early-mid 2000s, Cup teams, Maple Leaf Gardens, they had an assortment of good teams and they never ran off a streak like this.

Of course, there were shorter schedules back in the old days, so........ guess that's why it took this long.

The reason is probably more fundamental than a shorter schedule.

For much of their existence, games ended in ties. In that 10 game win streak, you are counting 2 Shoot Out wins.

For example, the 66-67 Leafs went 10-0-3 to start their season at home with the “3” being ties... not OTL for you millennials ;) Give them a shoot out to end the game and they may have set the streak at 13 Ws

I believe going 8-4-1 the rest of the way would result in the best regular season in franchise history. Don't know if it happens, but that would be something special.

Give them an overtime and they might have set the record. That was back when reg. season games were 60 minutes no more no less, no sudden death.

also tied the record for fastest to 40 wins in a season. This is one of the best Leafs teams we've ever had
I think many still do not realize how special this team is. Many are too busy worrying about the negatives (especially after a string of losses), that we simply ignore what is happening in front of us. In two years, this team has set Leaf records for:

Auston Matthews
Goals by a rookie
Points by a rookie
Most goals by a rookie in their first game (NHL record)
Most penalty shot attempts, one game

William Nylander
Longest point streak by a rookie
Fastest regular season overtime goal (NHL record)

Mitch Marner
Assists by a rookie

Zach Hyman
Shorthanded goals by a rookie

This ignores the franchise records that are still possible to break such as most wins in a season by both team and goalie, most OT goals scored (Mats Sundin had 4, both Willie and Auston have 2) and most points in a season (team).

Ok, people need to chill a bit. Pookie already mentioned the reason many records are supposedly being broken due to the change in the game with overtime. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to compare records, like most wins, given the difference in the two eras (pre and post OT).

Yes, we are building a special team here, but lets not fool ourselves into thinking that this group is even top 10 all-time until they do something special like make a deep run in the playoffs. Freddy is papering over some deficiencies in our game until we can improve the talent depth and gain some more experience with our current core.

We’ve been bad since they stopped allowing ties, that’s why. Other teams were more impressive just 5 on 5 OT and ties make racking up wins a lot harder.

If no ties were around in the Gilmour and Sundin era, they would likely have most of the records.

dude. the franchise is 101 years old and they set a new record

the fact they haven't done something that several teams can do like every years without their best players should be celebrated not "chilled a bit."

Those are all very impressive and when you mention Nylander's NHL record for the fastest overtime goal, the fact it was on a penalty shot makes it look even better.

What does it mean to "tie"? Who is the winner in this case?

True.

But that’s why this home streak now is easier to achieve. Still impressive. No doubt. But like point totals and such, the format for awarding such things has changed.

Not sure if this is sarcasm, or father time catching up to me. In a tie, no one wins. 5 minutes OT, then teams go home with 1 point each.

The fact that you mentioned OT means you have a ways to go on aging, compared to some of us.
