Maple Leafs select G Eric Fichaud at 16th overall. He would play 95 games in the NHL and would never play a single game for the Leafs.
Nobody significant was taken after him in the first round. It was a pretty weak draft year I think.

I beg to differ with the last statement of it being a weak draft. There are quite abit of current NHLer's in the NHL that were selected in that draft. Fichaud did do well in the pre-season games that he played in. I remember watching at least 1 of those on TSN.

Is it just me or have the Vancouver Canucks done the worst job at drafting in the last 10 years!

Since Ohlund was selected in the first round in 1994, there have been a total of 18 players that have played for the team. Of those, only 6 remain (7 if you count Chubarov playing in Russia this year). The 2000 draft is looking worse every day (Nathan Smith was our first round pick and he will probably never play in the NHL).

1995 - Chris McAllister, Larry Courville, Peter Schaefer, Brent Sopel
1996 - Josh Holden, Zenith Komarniski, Lubomir Vaic
1997 - Brad Ference, Harold Druken, Matt Cooke
1998 - Bryan Allen, Artem Chubarov, Jarkko Ruuttu
1999 - Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin
2000 - Brandon Reid
2001 - Fedor Fedorov
2002 - None
2003 - Ryan Kesler

The Canucks entire first line, the starting and backup goalie and 4 of the top 5 d-men came via trades. Imagine where the Canucks would be if they didn't trade so well.

If the Sedins, Bryan Allen and Kesler develop as expected, then this post will be wrong but how is the drafting record of other teams?

Every team makes a few bad picks, but in the Canucks case I think it's more bad luck than bad drafting. All high draft picks look pretty much equally sexy from year to year, but they don't all develop the same. I mean, does Atlanta have better scouting than Vancouver because they got to pick high in drafts where Heatley, Kovalchuk, Lehtonen were available, where the Canucks with high picks ended up with Allen and the Sedins?

I mean, compared with some lists people come up with about who got drafted immediately after their pick, we're hardly that bad. Looking at our draft picks the last 10 years, and the next 10 guys taken

95
No first

96
12- Holden, looked good, but injuries ruined his development
13-Morris, 22-Sturm
14-Reasoner, 15-Zubrus, 20-Nilson, ended up better than holden, but probably wouldn't have been if not for injuries
2 misses

97
10 - Ference
11-20 Ward, Hossa, Cleary, Riesen, Zultek, Jones, Dome, Holmqvist, Cherneski, Brown
1 Miss

98
4 - Allen
5-14 Vishnevsky, Fata, Malholtra, Bell, Rupp, Antropov, Herema, Tanguay, Henrich, DesRochers
2 Misses

99
2,3 - Sedins
4-13 Brendl, Connolly, Finley, Beech, Pyatt, Lundmark, Mezei, Saprykin, Schvidki, Rita
0 Misses
00
23 - Nathan Smith, brutal pick
25-Ott, 28-Williams, 29-Kronwall, 33-Schultz
4 Misses

01
16 - Umberger, Solid pick at the time, management screwed things up though
17-Colaiacovo, 19-Morrisonn, 20-Goc, 21-Armstrong, 23-Gleason, , 24-Krajicek, 25-Perezhogin
Too early to tell whats a miss
02
No first rounder
03
Kesler, solid pick
04/05 - Schneider, Bourdan, too early to tell but looks decent so far.

The Kings have really improved their drafting from 10 years ago.

Notable draftees:

1995: Aki Berg, Pavel Rosa, Vladimir Tsyplakov (Could have done better.)

1996: Josh Green, Eric Belanger (Not a very strong year)

1997: Oli Jokinen, Scott Barney, Joe Corvo (Better)

1998: Mathieu Biron, Justin Papineau, Kip Brennan, Joe Rullirer, Thomas Zizka (Nothing special)

1999: Frantisek Kaberle, Noah Clarke (Again nothing special)

2000: Alexander Frolov, Andreas Lilja, Yanick Lehoux, Lubomir Visnovsky (Awesome draft year where things would start to turn around)

2001: Michael Cammalleri, Richard Petiot, Cristobal Huet (2 First round busts but the Kings made up for it in the later rounds)

2002: Denis Grebeshkov, Segei Anshakov, Petr Kanko, Aaron Rome, Greg Hogeboom (Real strong draft year)

2003: Dustin Brown, Brian Boyle, Jeff Tambellini, Konstantin Puskarev, Ryan Munce, Brady Murray (Another Awesome draft for the Kings which could hold even more surprises.)

2004: Lauri Tukonen, Paul Baier, Ned Lukacevic, Yutaka Fukufuji
(Not as exciting as previous drafts but solid)

2005: Anze Kopitar, Dany Roussin (These first two should help out sooner than most people think.)

We had 3 phenomenal 1st rounders (one of them unfortunately developed with another team and 1 solig goaltender (who unfortunately spent only half a season with Pittsburgh).

So except these 4 players, the drafts were very, very poor, but luckily it got better over the years.

Anyone drafted from 2000 on still has a chance to develop especially goalies and defenceman. Usually you see glimmers of success based on minor league numbers or appearances with the big club so guys like Kesler and Allen can still prove me wrong. My point was simply that the Canucks first round picks seem so poor even when drafting high.

If I go back to 92 up to 2000 and do a run down of the entire draft (like x-bob).

The 2001 draft is looking very weak. Umberger is already on his third team. Bieksa and King might pan out still. 2002 isn't looking any better as none of those picks could be considered blue chip. 2003 has Ryan Kesler and 2004 has Cory Schneider and both of those are blue chippers.

Draft Review: One of our best drafts in years! Only 3 players never made the NHL.
Steal of the draft: Ribeiro, Markov and Ryder...what a great draft!

9-Petr Chvojka - 182nd overall - 0gp, 0pts -
10-Joni Puurula - 243rd overall - 0gp, 0pts -

Draft Review:A really bad draft. Hainsey and Hossa still ahve a chance but it's their make or breakc year
Steal of the draft: Balej
Bust of the draft: Hainsey and/ or Hossa (If they have a bad year)

Red = really good picks
Blue = Big Busts

Add a plethora of improvident trades (Chelios, Lemieux, Roy, etc.) to the above noted woeful drafting record and it should surprise no one that this once proud franchise has won only two championships over the past 26 years. Clumsy hands and muddled management have clearly dropped the torch.

That is all.

75 D Zenith Komarniski - 21 GP, 2 pts

Steal of the draft - Zenith Komarniski

Your kidding right?

Of course I am kidding. But for that year, he was the best player, taking into account who else was selected by the Canucks, not other teams. That pretty much says it all; It was a crappy draft year!!!

The '84-'99 Oilers deserve a nod. The worst being:

Jason Bonsignore
Steve Kelly

*barfs*

Don't remind me about that. The entire colisum was filled wiht fans shouting for local boy Shane Doan to be drafted by the Oilers. I can still recall DOAN, DOAN, DOAN. Sather goes up and says Steve Kelly. The hometown team got booed on thier first round selection. Looking back imagine if the Oilers had Doan right now on thier roster as well.

I think Oilers are winners here:
90 - someone named Scott Allison was selected 17th overall infront of Keith Tkachuk (19th) and Martin Brodeur(20th). Oh, and Vancouver selected Shawn Antoski 18th..
91- Tyler Wright infront of Alex Kovalev, Glen Murray, Palffy, Naslund.
92- Joe Hulbig (13th) while Gonchar, Peka, Straka were available..
93- Nick Stajduhar (16th). Allison, Koivu and Bertuzzi were selected later.
94- Jason Bonsignore(4th overall). Enough said.
95- Kelly (6th). Doan, Dvorak, Iginla were passed by Oil...
96- Devereaux (6th). But that was a really thin draft.

Hey I do have to say one thing regarding 1994 we did get Ryan Smyth, which is about all I can say. Thats a sad reflection on our scouting in the Sather Years. However things seem to have turned around under K-Lo.

Look at what the Leafs have done. I posted this over at DMD.
I was looking at our first round draft picks since 1993 and found some disturbing things... :p
1993
Maple Leafs Select RW Landon Wilson at 19th overall. He would never play a single game for us.
Saku Koivu taken 21st overall.
Todd Bertuzzi taken 23rd overall.
1994
Maple Leafs select G Eric Fichaud at 16th overall. He would play 95 games in the NHL and would never play a single game for the Leafs.
Nobody significant was taken after him in the first round. It was a pretty weak draft year I think.
1995
Maple Leafs Select D Jeff Ware at 15th overall. He would play 21 games in the NHL and 15 of those were with the Leafs. Career Point Total=1
Martin Biron taken 16th overall.
Petr Sykora taken 18th overall.
Alexei Morozov taken 24th overall.
1996
No First round picks.
1997
No First or 2nd round picks in a fairly stacked draft. Pretty bad because we could have had a top 5 pick...
1998
Maple Leafs select C Nikolai Antropov at 9th overall.
Alex Tanguay selected 12th overall.
Simon Gagne selected 22nd overall.
1999
Maple Leafs select C Luca Cereda at 24th overall.
Martin Havlat selected 26th overall.
2000
Maple Leafs select C Brad Boyes at 24th overall. He was traded away and has played 1 game in the NHL.
2001
Maple Leafs select D Carlo Colaiacovo at 17th overall. Maybe the first good pick so far, but we have yet to see what he can do in the NHL.
2002
Maple Leafs select C Alexander Steen at 24th overall. A pretty good draft year for the Leafs because we got Matty Stajan in the 2nd round.
2003
No first round draft pick.
2004
No first round draft pick.
2005
Maple Leafs select Tuukka Rask at 21st overall. Only time will tell.

Not pretty is it?

as a leafs fan thats nothing compared to the ballard years, we did draft some decent players but they were always traded away ie Freddie Modin, Kevyn Adamns, etc

some of those picks never panned out but I gotta stick up for ware and cereda, ware had a skate slice his eye causing him to retire and cereda was doing great until he had his heart surgery, I think hes had 2 in total and hasnt been the same since

Why are all you guys forgetting that Pittsburgh was not a bad team until this millenium..!!!!!! :banghead:

They won the stanley cup two years in a row and drafted Markus Naslund ans Martin Straka the following years...

Meanwhile my Montreal Canadiens drafter Brent Bilodeau and David Wilkie!!!!
