Thing is, with Matthews in the fold Stamkos was a (very) nice to have.
I'm sure the leafs are disappointed, but the fact is we've got our #1c and franchise player.
Yes, and it is much better to be paid in USD in Canada, then US. Thats like a 30% increase right there.
Bottom line is, he left money on the table. If he came to Toronto, he would have millions of dollars in revenue and endorsements for years after he retired. Third liners like domi and tucker still get paid to show up at community events. Gilmour and Joseph played here for like 4 years and are still golden gods here.
Johnny Bower still makes money here for crying out loud. He gave up a lot of money to stay in tampa. I guess it is respectable, but why wait? seems like a lot of posturing just to back down.
Very few leaf fans are hurt really? most esp after reading the tampa board, didn't want him especially for the price we would have to pay. I was very meh.

Seeing all the rage and bitterness over this, I wish he had waited until July 1st to announce it.
You'll see a lot of fun, when Bolts start to lose players who are more important for the team, than Stamkos...

Whom are we losing, We cut Carle today which frees up 5 million or so and Bish will be traded by next year and we cut Flip or trade him and we have enough cap space to keep everyone.

It frees up around 3,6 mill, not 5.

I actually agree with him. How is it fair that some teams has much lower taxes than other teams?
Its a huge advantage for them because players make alot more money on the same deal in Florida for example than in other states.

First - administrability. Talk about a logistical headache.
Second - legality. There are probably more than a few issues with that.
Third - plausibility. No way the owners would agree to it.
Fourth - Competitive fairness. This is basically a way for Toronto, Habs, and Rangers fans to ***** and moan that no one is signing there. Guess what - they're not signing there because of the teams, not because of the tax situation. Higher taxes give numerous advantages (reliable mass transit, medical coverage, roads, etc. ad nauseum). Moreover high tax areas tend to be highly desirable areas.
Fifth - slippery slope. Do we also control for property values in a location? 1 million can get you a 4000 square foot mansion in Dallas. It probably wouldn't get you a 400 square foot apt. in Manhattan. THAT'S NOT FAIR!

Not at all. In a salary cap league, things like this matter. Why would a team need to offer more $$$ to make up for a difference in taxes and waste more of the salary cap in the process? It'd also be pretty easy to manage from an NHL standpoint, really. What's ridiculous is not doing anything about it.

Probably not the best in the Stamkos thread. The vast majority of leaf fans were very buyer beware on him....
That being said, how many advantages do the small market teams want? I mean come on, obviously yes it makes sense to make a cap, so that the other teams can play too. But there is no cap on how much tickets and merch cost either. There is no secret advantage to the big market teams, other than we support the team. We dont get to pay in canadian tire money (as we know, that didnt work).
Toronto fans have to pay hundreds of dollars to take kids to games, and then florida gives tickets away with pizza. Not only that, then there is revenue sharing, and the draft lottery. The leafs are paying the salaries of the other teams to beat them. And we use our tax dollars and time to fund public rinks and junior programs.
So the fans of the big market teams pay for and volunteer time to develop stars. Then they get drafted to small market american teams. Then the fans have to pay extra to watch worse players play so that other teams can afford to pay them. Then some teams get a tax advantage too? Maybe small market teams should support their teams. Then other fans would be able to afford to take their kids to a game or buy a jersey.
