So many Finnish and Swedish posters still awake?

It's 5.10 am, go to sleep now!

04:15 here right now but I should go to sleep soon. I MUST get some prime brew for sundays game. This socialist (we know better than you) country closes the alcohol sale at 15:00 on weekends.

Go Finland! I have watched their games when I could (mainly because my family is of Finnish descent) and I think they play good hockey. Some may call it boring, but if what teh Finns are doing is a trap, well then it is the fastest paced trap I have ever seen. They were aggressive backchecking and got in the passing lanes for takeaways. Also, don't the typical traping teams hurt themselves offensively by their style of play? They are definately using a hybrid system that the hard working nature of the Finnish players make work perfectly. Plus they are scoring in bunches while holding their opponents to nothing. I think it is impressive hockey, watching a team just controll the game as they have done this tournament. Best of luck to them! I am looking forward to this match up and have been hoping for it since the quarterfinals!

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth..

If anybody was around to listen the Saku Koivu interview (In Canada), you would have found out that he made a statement regarding the fact that Russia was superior in skill to the Finns, so they could not go head to head with them and hope to win.
The prognosis of the situation is this: Finland adapted and overcame the Russian obstacle..

This is called cheating now?? Hah... What a joke. I suppose that they should have laid down and given the game away?

Finland vs. Sweden is a most entertaining and well deserved gold medal game.

Hakkaa paalle Suomen Poika!!! :yo:

so is hockey the most intense embodiment of the sweden-finland rivalry? i know sweden has a decent football team but i'm not so sure about finland. since there seems to be so much clamour about this game i was just wondering if this was the pinnacle of the rivalry or if there are other intense forms it takes (both in and out of sports)
Hockey pretty much is the pinnacle of Nordic fighting, yes. As you may know, Sweden has had a long stint of peace since they lost Finland to Russia. They had to give up fighting after 1809, because they could not fight to the last Finn and win anymore. They had to project ther puny aggressiveness to somewhere else after that... So, hockey it is now...

A little weird, yes. I'm hoping that Lundqvist will come back from the Olympics driven by the knowledge that he came close to winning gold.

As for Niittymäki, the way I see it, he's a great ex-TPS goalie. I forget what club he plays for now...

Yeah, no matter what will happen they both have had a great tournament.

Actually, I should add to that comment: it's a little weird to root for the Flyers' goalie and against the Rangers' goalie, but it's not tough at all. When it comes to national competitions, I root for my country (countries!), and the clubs don't make a difference.

The weird part is that I don't want Niittymäki to suddenly make Philadelphia unbeatable, or for Henrik's confidence to take a blow.

Why are any of you expecting a good game? The finns will play the pathetic trap, and win. I dont understand why everyone is giving finland so much credit. ANY country can play the trap, but they choose not to, because its basically cheating.
Sorry, this is quite a ridicolous statement, really only to laugh at it :biglaugh:

Quite possibly the greatest and most storied living rivalry in hockey outside of Canada and Russia. It will be a very intense game.

If Finland plays their game, they will win. It's that simple. They execute their system and their game plan to perfection. And they can win in every way possible. This is a team in the truest sense of the word. They aren't the most talented team out there, and they don't have the outright firepower or upside of the Swedes. They're also showing the value of having a few players currently playing in Europe.

The Finns kind of remind me of this year's Canadian WJC team that won gold. Not the most talented team in the tournament. But with a commitment to team play and a multi-faceted approach that enables them to play any style of game, they're able to overcome the talent gap versus other teams, and then some. Hockey is a team game, and the better team wins.

Should be an interesting final. Finland MUST be considered favourites after putting a wall in the defensive zone in these olympics. If the trend continues Finland should win 2-0 or 3-0, but if the Swedish stars can step up and put in a total team effort like the Finns have done throughout the tourney then it will be a fight to the finish.

Since I always prefer a more skilled puck-possession team (note I still said TEAM, e.g. not 'group of individuals' like Canada, US or even Russia to an extent) over a trapping, forechecking team, here's hoping Sweden wins the gold on Sunday!

P.S. And I'll be especially cheering for the 'Swedish Five'.

After taking Russia to hockey school and making them look about as dangerous as a newborn kitten, how can Finland lose the final??!!

Naaahhh... as much as I´d like to see them outclass Sweden too, I know it´s not likely. Finland is playing its best hockey ever and they just seem too seasoned and simply too good (as a TEAM) for everybody, but the Finland vs. Sweden games are almost always competitive and somehow I believe this one will be no exception.

4-2 to Finland (but still a close game!)

PS. Anyone still missing Raimo Summanen? (who?) :biglaugh:
