I'll take the 40 point player who is physical and pretty sound defensively.

Helm is no longer notably fast and as you point out has hands of stone. Replacing a guy who's a good penalty killer and good defensively (hello Glendening) is a lot easier than replacing what Abby does. Abdelkader is on pace to put up 37 points on this craptacular (and now full on tanking) team. He's been one of the bright spots.

Don't get me wrong though, I hate both their contracts.
Just to be a stickler, Abby is pacing 40 points in an 82 game season with his missed games.

Give me Abby 10/10 as a hockey player, the term is just awful.

Why would any team want a 39 year-old Brian Gionta who couldn't land an NHL contract this past off season? Teams are always looking for depth. There are injuries. Helm is still a good PKer. Hell bring value to a team for a 3rd or 4th round pick.
Yah, Helm is sitll good on the PK.

But who was space to pay a PK specialist 4 million? That is 2 mil max.

Helm is a less skilled version of Stacey Roest. Anyone remember his brief run with Detroit? I doubt it.

Helm's a lot better than Stacey Roest, though he is still overpaid. If we don't qualify for the playoffs next year (and why would we, at this point?), we can void his NTC for the following year. We retain part of that salary, I don't think we'd have a hard time moving him at some point before the following TDL. Holland just has to be willing to.

Have you ever seen Roest play?

Roest so much better than Helm. Better skater, hands, hockey sense.

Helm would only be better on the PK. That is it.

Overall, its a no contest. Roest > Helm.

And now we see why you were never, a scout! Terrible assessment of players. Roest played what, 1 game (sarcasm) in the NHL? Know it wasn't much and he was nothing to write home about. Helm has been a great speedster and PK'er his whole career. If we were competitive he would be a great piece on our 3rd or 4th line.

Lets agree to disagree and just say they should have let them both go and started a rebuild instead of signing them.

Helm was better when he was just a grinder who lived and died by his speed. Over the years I feel the organization has tried to push him to be something he isn't and his game has taken a huge hit because of it. Much like Glendening, Helm is just a grinder. Play him (and pay him) as so and there is no issue.

Man I remember back in 99/00 (I think) when a ton of injuries piled up and Bowman used a 4th line of Butsayev-Roest-LaPlante, with ?Mark Rogers? in the mix too.

I remember LaPlante was insane on NHL99 or 2000 when you used the "speed boost" button.:laugh::laugh:

Helm is a playoff player. When he's focused, he plays his best. He had some monster shifts in the playoffs. I think he kind of goes through the motions during stretches of the regular season.

That moment when you realize the Wings have missed the playoffs as many times since 1980 as the Avs have in the last 9 years.

Dude it's been 9 years since the Wings have done any damage in the PO's. Over 1/2 the league make it in every season and we've done nothing but decline in that time period. Holland's rebuild-on-the-fly failed miserably. The Wings should have pulled the plug and started truly restocking when we were made a joke of in 2012 and Lids retired.

I don't mind bending over to the Avs, they have a far more entertaining team with a brighter foreseeable future. Just for the record I'm talking about bending over in a polite bow, not the other way.

I think less of people that hold this opinion.

That's cool. With the clarity of hindsight I don't know how someone could see it any other way. I'm definitely not trying to spark that tired discussion. I'm just saying, how many more years until the fabled glory of the "streak" drifts away and we have nothing to deflect from how pitiful and stale the Wings are?

It's a boring, dumb hot take. No one cares.
