If you're going to claim financial hardship, it's not going to get better for NB anytime soon, so take a bigger step to get bigger savings otherwise I see them in the same spot in 1-2 years.

From the second story on the hockey team and STU's deficit in today's The Daily Gleaner.

"She (Lily Fraser, STU VP of Finance & Admin) said the university is looking at different strategies to address the problem (budget shortfall). One of those options involved decreasing expenditures in non-academic areas, including athletics."

It's just a matter of time before the women's team is cancelled.

It's the harsh reality of today's NB demographics and economy.

Just throwing things out there, but it wasn't all that long ago that SMU cut their WHKY team, and just days later Canadian Tire stepped in to donate $60,000 in keeping the program alive. Having said that, obviously different circumstances there, as SMU was a national competitor for WHKY, which STU is a far cry from as of right now. I'm highly skeptical it will happen, but the only way I see STU getting MHKY back in the foreseeable future is if corporate dollars become involved.

Really sad and unfortunate situation, but something had to go at STU.

For the love of apathy

A few thoughts on the men's hockey program being cut.

To those who say "who cares". Either never cared or apathetic. First is fine, the second became a learned behaviour.

Sure it's about the money. What else could be said. The hockey program has been a lightning rod for STU for at least 7 or 8 years. That tower has been torn down, no more lightning.

The acceptance of the decision by the Athletic Director is amusing. His self interest was more important than the program and he knuckled under immediately. If you remember he was suppose to be a big proponent for the program, how did that work out? Those that opposed him were cast as Mike "haters" and trouble makers. Warning sign, after warning sign, after warning sign. Ignored. Apathy set in, Mike's best friend in this whole episode.

The local media, apathetic, can you blame them? No. They tried. They even made waves once and a while but you can't keep pounding on the same drum before people get bored of it or you have to let it go. Apathy eventually wins. Not to mention the counter spin that the University was sure to interject every time lightening struck. Why even bother? That is apathy.

Long time supporters, apathetic, can you blame them? No. Take things up the line. Nothing changed. Complaints were ignored repeatedly. The complainers were the problem. Stop complaining, it will get looked after. It got looked after for sure. Apathy.

Alumni, apathetic, can you blame them? No. Ignored for so long, why would they care. BTW, send us some money. Don't ask why or where it will go, just send. Try to appeal to our school spirit and don't listen to your friends that tell you there is al problem. Ignore them and give us money, we'll fix it. Trust us, not your friends. Confused apathy.

When did the apathy begin and why? Then you might be able to figure out why the program went the way it did.

You can't make this stuff up.

According to HockeyDB, Mike Eagles has been part of 10 teams as a player or coach since 1979. Only 4 of them still exist the same way as they did when Mike was there. The four teams are the Melville Millionaires, Kitchener Rangers, Chicago Blackhawks, and Washington Capitals.

The curse of the Eagles has ruined the following, the Billington Bighorns, Quebec Nordiques, Fredericton Express, Indianapolis Ice, Winnipeg Jets, and STU Tommies. More than half.

UNB looking for some coaching help for their women's hockey team? Just add Mike, things will get looked after in time. I don't think the human rights commission would dare to mess with that wrecking ball of a human being.
