Behind the Bench
Ryan Huska [Head Coach]
Huska has won four Memorial Cups; the award earned by the best major junior team across all three major junior leagues in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Those three leagues are the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).
The Memorial Cup is considered by many to be one of the toughest trophies in all of sports to earn. First, the team goes through a grueling regular season and makes the playoffs within their respective league. Said team then must make it out of their league playoffs as champion to advance to the Memorial Cup. Finally, the winners of each league, along with a host team determined prior to the season, compete in a four team, round-robin tournament to determine the best team in the CHL for that year.
Todd Gill [Assistant Coach]
If the name Todd Gill doesn’t sound familiar to you as a California hockey fan, it should. Gill captained the San Jose Sharks for two seasons from 1996-1998 and was one of the pound-for-pound toughest guys in the NHL during his 19-year career.
Originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1984, Gill played 1007 career games in the NHL and amassed 354 points (82 goals, 272 assists) to go along with 1,214 penalty minutes.
Dominic Pittis [Assistant Coach]
For the past two years in Calgary, Pittis began his coaching career working with Calgary’s abundance of young talent – Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Lance Bouma, Sam Bennett, and Josh Jooris to name a few – as they develop into full-time NHL stars.
Pittis surely had a major role in the Flames surprising run in the 2014-15 playoffs. Prior to the season, Calgary wasn’t projected by many to even be a playoff contender in the always cutthroat Western Conference. Yet, the flourishing young talent led the Flames to their first playoff birth since 2008-09 and they became one of those teams that you just don’t want to run into for a seven-game series.
Scott Gouthro [Goaltending Coach]
He has also worked with Canada’s sledge hockey team that participated in the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia, as well as spent time as an instructor at the prestigious Hockey Canada Program of Excellence goaltending camp.
The Hockey Canada Program of Excellence goaltending camp has produced some of the top young NHL goaltending prospects since it’s inception in 2006, including current Calgary Flames prospect and 2014 second-round pick Mason McDonald.
Meet the Heat
Jon Gillies [Goaltender]
Most recently Gillies is coming off of arguably his best season, seeing as he won the NCAA Championship with Providence in 2014-15 and was named the tournament’s MVP.
jon gillies championshipGillies also found himself named to the NCAA’s All-Tournament Team, was recognized as NCAA East’s Second All-American Team and again named to New England’s Division 1 All-Star Team. The honors didn’t stop there as he was named to Hockey East’s First All-Star Team and Hockey East’s Goalie of the Year.
Apart from winning the NCAA title, Gillies played a NCAA high 39 games, had a NCAA high of 24 wins, and established a career numbers with a 2.01 goals-against-average. He’s also just been very consistent over the course of his amateur career, posting a save-percentage of .931, .931 and .930 during his NCAA career.
Hunter Smith [Right Wing]
Smith began his junior career with the Windsor Spitfires but found himself traded to the Oshawa Generals just before the start of the 2012-13 season, his first full season in the Canadian Hockey League.
Every year Smith showed improvement in every major statistical category; goals, assists, points, and even plus-minus. Not only did the winger improve every year, but he also played postseason hockey during all four of his years in the OHL.
This past season was a particularly memorable one for Smith as he helped Oshawa to an OHL Championship and a Memorial Cup Championship in what could be his last season in the OHL.
Bill Arnold
The former 2010 fourth-round pick of the Calgary Flames made his name at Boston College playing alongside another fourth-round pick of the Flames, Johnny Gaudreau.
During his career at Boston College, Arnold registered 144 points (58 goals, 86 assists) in 159 games and won a National Championship in 2012.
At the age of 23, the Needham, Massachusetts-native is already a highly decorated player.
Add to the 2012 National Championship 3 Hockey East Championships, Hockey East All-Rookie and All-Academic Team bids in 2010-11, a Hockey East ‘Best Defensive Forward’ Award in 2013-14 and a World Juniors U-18 Gold Medal with the United States in 2010.
Brett Kulak [Defense]
Kulak is a name that should be familiar to Stockton hockey fans, as he spent the majority of the 2014-15 season with the Calgary Flames’ former ECHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles.
The 21-year-old defenseman played 9 games against the Stockton Thunder and finished the year with 4 assists and a plus-10 rating versus Stockton.
His ECHL totals were solid too, racking up 30 points (9 goals, 21 assists) and a plus-9 rating in 39 games.
Morgan Klimchuk [Left Wing]
He did get his first taste of pro hockey when he spent what equated to a cup of coffee in the AHL with the Abbotsford Heat in 2013-14. He played just 4 games in Abbotsford after his junior season ended.
Klimchuk is only 20-years-old and is more than likely entering his first full pro season in the Calgary organization in 2015-16. Obviously, Klimchuk hopes to spend much more time in the pro ranks this time around than his first trip to the pros.
With the level of growth shown in his game on the ice and his maturity off of it, there are few people that doubt Klimchuk’s ability to step onto the NHL or AHL roster and make an immediate impact.
Kenny Agostino [Left Wing]
Our focus today is on forward Kenny “Kenneth is my Father†Agostino.
If you followed the Adirondack Flames at all after the January 29 announcement of the team moving west to Stockton, you undoubtedly heard the name “Kenny Agostino†in some variation on the broadcasts. That’s because he was Adirondack’s top playmaker and one of the most consistent players in the lineup every night.
The Morristown, New Jersey native led the Flames in points (43) and assists (28), while finishing fourth on the team with 67 games played.
Agostino was a two-way threat on the penalty kill as well, finishing the 2014-15 season tied for second in the AHL with 3 shorthanded goals.
Not too shabby for a rookie season, eh?
Austin Carroll [Right Wing]
At 6’3â€, 216lbs., Carroll is also no stranger to physical competition and thrives in that aspect of the game. He has no problem mixing it up and throwing hands when necessary.
Here’s a question for any of the former Stockton Thunder fans reading this: Do you remember how dominant Klarc Wilson looked last year when he threw his gloves off and challenged someone?
Well he and Carroll went at it in juniors back in 2014, and while Wilson certainly held his own, showing that familiar toughness we got to know and love, Carroll scored the win in the end.
Oliver Kylington [Defense]
Our focus today is on rookie defenseman Oliver Kylington (SHILL-ing-ton), who was just sent our way yesterday.
Kylington is unique in the right that he joins the Flames organization as an 18-year-old rookie that began playing professionally in his home country of Sweden at the ripe age of 16.
To be considered a rookie coming from an elite league overseas, a player must have no more than 100 games played in their respective country’s top league. Kylington clocks in with 50 games played in Sweden’s elite league.
Ryan Lomberg [Left Wing]
Lomberg joins the Heat following his final year with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL. He captained the Phantoms to a record-breaking 17-game win streak and a playoff appearance to boot.
His 24 goals were good for fifth on the team and his plus-15 led the Phantoms in that category.
The 5’10â€, 190lb. winger also led Youngstown in penalty minutes with 146 in his 46 games.
Lomberg’s stat line suggests that he is undersized, but outworks opponents for space and isn’t afraid to get into the tough areas on the ice. Thus far in camp, he has confirmed that assertion with his play in the first three days he’s spent here in Stockton.
Colton Orr [Right Wing]
You ever here the saying “I wouldn’t want to meet him in a dark alley Well Colton Orr is a guy you wouldn’t want to meet in a well lit alley of the safest neighborhood in town, let alone a dark alley.
Measuring 6’3†and weighing in at 225 lbs., Orr is a legitimate heavyweight tough guy with nearly 500 games of NHL experience.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native ranks ninth among active players with 1,186 penalty minutes in his NHL career and established himself as arguably one of the top five fighters in the NHL over the last decade.
