Phew...I thought it was going to cost Pastrnak, Spooner and 2 firsts. Good trade for the caps. It might be their year.

If the Blues knew what Parayko was they would have drafted him in the first round and not three total busts before him.

That's not how drafting works. If you know a guy won't be considered until later rounds, you don't blow picks before him if he'll still be on the board later.

Good move by the Caps but last I heard there aren't a lot of undisciplined penalties in the playoffs so PP chances are normally few and far between.

And that's what his specialty is, eh?

That makes Shattenkirk even more valuable...got to cash in on those PP chances when you get them.

Teams dont get cred for getting lucky in a later round, they get cred for going off the board. If the Blues knew what Parayko was they would have drafted him in the first round and not three total busts before him.

Using luck for your assessment of a scouting team will never work out well.

Incredibly stupid statement. Picking Parayko in the 1st round, when many better players were available, would have made his selection just as bad as it was good in the 3rd round.

This trade basically boils down to Shattenkirk at 39% retained for 1st in 2017 and conditional 2nd in 2019.

This is a very good deal for WSH. STL should've gotten more for Shattenkirk.

No, if you know someone will be a star you pick them up asap. Had Detroit known in 1999 what Zetterberg would become in the NHL, they would have drafted him in the 1st, not the 7th round. Heck, had Atlanta known they would have picked him 1st OA.

I think it is pretty safe to say that Chicago and Minny won't have to worry about the Blues for a few years. Its rebuilding time. Too many holes, and not enough to fill them in their top 6.

Yes and no. NHL drafting is a total black box outside of the first round. You know who the top guys are and a few after but once you're past there it's basically a mystery where players are regarded by various teams. There is not a great central way of assessing it to have a general idea of player values. TSN only ranks the top 30 for instance. Notice how they don't know anything about the players drafted after the first round.

You are completely ignorant of the situation. Im not going to go and quote the other posts, so Ill sum it up with yours.

It is well documented that the Blues had a good idea what Parayko would become. He flew under 27 other teams radar due to where he played. The Blues went through some lengths to hide that they were scouting him. You could say they drafted him early due to not wanting to press their luck anymore. TML had some interest in him along with 1 other team.

The notion that it was dumb luck isnt accurate outside off the fact that few scouts had any idea who this kid was.

Even if they thought they could get him in the fifth round, if you're really high on him you'd draft him in the third round just to guarantee it since you never really know what other scouts are doing.

Is Shattenkirk fast though? That's the only question really. Caps need a fast defenseman good in his own end to compete with Pens.

Washington has to be the odds on favorite to win the cup now. That defense is just silly.

The Caps are not favorites for anything except making the playoffs. They are the Caps they wont be the favorites to win the cup until Bettman hands it to Ov.

That said I would not want to play them in the playoffs on the chance this is their year.

Shattenkirk skates between Orlov and Niskanen for speed. He is not that good without the puck or in his own zone. Reirden and Trotz will have to coach him up.
He does not PK and therefore again is like Orlov.

This a right handed Orlov with more experience.

This is actually pretty funny, and not true at all
