How does this game out for him? At least 2 of Hamhuis, Oleksiak, and Nemeth will be here post expansion plus Lindell isn't going anywhere. I've been assuming they'll spend a little getting a new lefty in, hoping for Brendan Smith, but that means he won't have a spot next year most likely.

Nice signing.

Smooth skating offensive defenseman.

Good bloodlines as he is the cousin of NHL defenseman Ben Lovejoy.

Got to know his parents well when he played in Cedar Rapids

My guess is Nill has no problem handing him a roster spot next year, especially with the love of carrying 8 defenders.

I get that HF doesn't want people hurling insults around, but the city locations could very well have been a factor.

Look at the timing. He made this decision during the peak of the winter's ugliest nor'easter. He grew up in New England and apparently has never lived anywhere remotely warm. I can imagine him getting done brushing snow off his car, driving back to his apartment at 30 mph due to the snow on the roads, walking up the icy steps to his apartment, getting in the door where he takes off his gloves, hat, scarf, boots, and overcoat, and saying, "You know what, screw this. I'm going to Texas."

Now, we should also revisit his decision when he gets off a plane in July and starts melting the moment he steps outside.

There are a few goalies on that "Top College UFA" list, and maybe the Stars should look into just signing one or both of those, just for depth?

We've got Bow and Point and everyone hopes we make a big overhaul this year at the NHL level. From a future playing time perspective there are probably clearer paths to being a backup in 2 years than Dallas.

My guess is Nill has no problem handing him a roster spot next year, especially with the love of carrying 8 defenders.

This is an impressive level of cynicism Troy, and that makes me happy but it would make me furious if Nill did that. Is there anybody who is in favor of this 8 defensemen thing? Heika via his last chat seems to think we've collected all the data we need to put a stop to the 2 goalie system going forward and I'd like to think 8 defensemen is another thing that we have a verdict on.

Was it bad? There didn't seem to be bad posts but that could be because they all got deleted.

I needed an answer to my question about whether he clears the crease well or is a good fighter. And I never got to follow up with is he better at blocking shots or hitting. I need to know these things.

Cynicism can go to great depths here.

Nill traded Benn because he said they didn't want to expose him in the expansion draft, which tells you Nill didn't like Benn enough to protect him. You then can't help but wonder how much Nill likes the other d-men on his roster. So far, it doesn't look like Nill cares one bit about the young guys getting ice time because Ruff continues to rotate guys in and out with no rhyme or reason. If Nill had serious love for Nemeth, Johns, or Oleksiak, you'd think it would be obvious by their ice time and place in the lineup. It seems the only young d-man getting any consistent love is Lindell.

Then we have Honka being promised playing time as the season winds down, which can only lead one to believe Honka is being penciled in for a roster spot next season as well right alongside Bayreuther. Honka coming up now will only work to push another one of Nemeth, Johns, or Oleksiak to the health scratch list. Maybe we will get a hint about who of them the team likes best when we see who plays, but it's hard to tell what the team thinks of a guy's overall game considering how this team is obsessed with whether a player is lefty/righty more so than whether a player is good/bad, which is a pretty stupid way to build a roster, as evidenced by the standings. There's a decent chance we figure out Nill thinks all three of Nemeth, Johns, or Oleksiak are spares with no future.

I love how the scouting report on this DEFENSEMAN says nothing about his ability to DEFEND haha.

The new NHL, and the new Stars haha.

I will reserve judgment until seeing how this guy is in the D-Zone, but the scouting report makes me nervous that we could have yet another offensive specialist in our defense prospect pool which is already rife with offensive talent and lacking in defensive dependability.

I want a specialist in DEFENDING...any offensive ability is cake, but it's not what is going to fix our goals-against problem...and that problem is not all on the goalies or our forwards' possession game either. I still believe in breaking up plays, getting sticks in lanes, takeaways, blocking shots, standing people up at the blue line, and not turning the puck over in bad places often, and getting the puck out of our zone cleanly. Defense.

Possession drives defense. Dallas blocks plenty of shots and gets plenty of sticks in lanes. Constantly getting counterpunched because our forwards can't get it deep, can't hold on to the puck, and just want to hammer the throttle all the way to the icing line is getting them killed this year.

The blame is probably equal across the board for why the systemic collapse is occurring, but then that means ultimate blame is on the coaching staff.

But hey, we're watching what basically boils down to scripted professional sports and that's basically how other sports leagues are losing ratings faster than anyone can figure out. It is literally fake competition and that is the most ******** thing I can think of.

imagine caring about playing defense in 2017

Brain...won't...compute...defense...

Only understands offense, speed, and possession.

New NHL Positions:

LW
C
RW
Rear Left Forward
Rear Right Forward

...Let's just drop the term "Defenseman" altogether...it's outdated ;)

Why have offense, speed, and possession when you can have short handed goals against, no breakouts, and poor positioning.
