I think tellez is a mid season call up after they waste 200 at bats watching smoak look useless. I think smoak will be dfa'd before the season is over.

Fully expect this team to be better by mid season it they roll with tellez/Pearce combo at first and pompey everyday in left.

Hmm, Rowdy is a beefy 22-year old who Gibbons called our most advanced prospect. If he out-duels Smoak in spring training, I wonder if we might just start the season with him.

Doubt it. And not just because of Smoak's contract but because of service time considerations and him not having seen a pitch at AAA.

As much as I would love to see him on the opening day roster, it would be perfectly reasonable to start him at AAA regardless of what he does in the next couple weeks. Even setting aside the sample size, how much majoor league pitching is he going to face?

I'm a big prospects guy but I agree no rush for rowdy. he probably is already as good as smoal but probably also not much better. he could use time at AAA both offensively and defensively. and he's struggled to start each new level so far before dominating.

ideally he's a midseason callup and in the mix to start next year.

A pretty big door just opened for us to compete with Boston for the division if Price is gone long term, allthough I still believed we could still play with Boston even with Price. They were just better on paper

I think their rotation is overrated. Ours can go toe-to-toe with theirs easily. And the lineups are pretty comparable too. Everybody expects the Boston offence to just repeat what they did last season, but as the 2016 Blue Jays showed, it is very hard to repeat such dominance with the sticks.

Yeah, as much as people have complained about replacing Edwin with Morales, the Sox filling Ortiz's spot with Moreland is the equivalent of replacing Edwin with Smoak.

Of course, they made up for the loss of offense by picking up Sale, but that move would be pretty much completely negated if Price ends up needing TJ.

mayza’s stock in the organization has skyrocketed the last couple of years. Jays manager john gibbons was almost giddy on thursday when asked about the big left-handed prospect.

“yeah, you saw him (wednesday), that was pretty impressive,” gibbons said. “we always knew he had a good arm, just needs to harness it a little bit, throw more strikes. Everybody thinks he’s got a chance to be really, really good. That appearance (wednesday), that will get your attention. Every team in baseball is looking for good left-handed relievers. of course (brett) cecil’s gone now, you’re always looking for those guys.”

mayza’s heat didn’t surprise gibbons as much as the 25-year-old’s control and slider against the tigers.

“he can throw up there, but he’s got a breaking ball too,” he added. “i’ll tell you what, if he puts it all together, it’s going to be tough on left-handed hitters. Even right-handed hitters.”

if mayza’s progression continues, he may be a left-handed option coming out of the bullpen for the jays this year.

“right now my fastball is the key,” mayza, who throws a two- and four-seamer, said. “and that’s kind of been the key to my progression is just fastball command. The slider’s really come along in the past couple of years and that’s been a real good out pitch for me to get guys to swing.”
said mayza, “the last few years it’s kind of gotten more and more consistent. The more i’m out there the more experience i get, the more confident i am, the more comfortable i am. And the velocity has come along with that. I just want to keep going out there and keep doing what i need to do and control what i need to control and whatever happens, happens.”

I think our rotation can go to-to-toe with them even if they have both Price and Sale. We don't have a Price or Sale, on paper, but who's to say that Sanchez and Stroman won't be just as good as them this season? They have the talent. They are on the way to being that good, while Price and Sale have already established themselves.

That's what I saw. Just seems he's always out

He had surgery on his knee after the playoff run ended. He's taking batting practice, and trending in the correct direction. Similar to Pearce.

The way your post read, it seemed like you believed it was a situation more similar to Donaldson's than Pearce.

Yeah Travis is very injury prone. I could see him going down the Lupul career path unfortunately.

If he was 100% healthy, this team would be much much better
