NJ needs two left defenders. Maybe Moore can be one of them but I’m skeptical. I’d prefer Butcher to stay on the third pairing to save wear and tear on his smaller frame. Maybe he and Mueller are a good third pairing but my thought is that the answer for top two pairing left defenders are not on the team or in the system yet.

I'd give Moore the rest of this season with a new attacking style to see if he can continue to keep this level of play. Unless something falls into Shero's lap, I see little reason to actively look to make a trade for a quality LD. Any trade for what we truly need is going to require giving up a piece that I don't think we're ready to move just yet.

But by the end of the year, I think we will have a better idea of where Greene and Moore are at and where the kids (Santini, Mueller, Butcher, and Severson) are at.

I hate Moore, but in this system, he is definitely a second pairing defender. Moore's issues (and same goes for Severson) is when the games become a grind fest against bigger teams like the Jets and the Capitals.

I'd plan on having Butcher phase his way up the line-up as Greene continues to regress and get a legitimate 1LD. A legitimate 1LD is truly the only thing we need.

Agreed on the 1LD.

Having Butcher and Mueller on the left may end up being our 2LD and 3LD long term as well. Honestly was figuring we may find that in the draft this year in a defender that may be ready in a year or 2 but we may have to find that a different way now with the way our team is performing.

Greene-Santini is actually a pretty bad pairing. Yes they’re playing against top competition, but they’re getting obliterated every night. Ideally we can find a way to acquire a great left handed dman to carry Santini like Severson carries John Moore. I wonder who we could acquire with our 1st+?

Trade-Santini
Moore-Severson
Greene-Butcher

I'm starting to come around to this. I don't know who it should be, but I really do think we need a strong LHD to play next to Santini and drop Greene to the third pairing. Shero has to see the same things we're seeing, hopefully he can do something soon.

I don't think Sevs actually carries Moore though. From my view, they seem to prop each other up. Sevs is more defensively responsible, and Moore is more offensively gifted. Once they get their little quirks sorted out that's actually a nice 2nd pair.

Bit late as I had no Internet or data all weekend, but Little Caesars is a very nice arena. The fans were very nice and respectful, and were very supportive of their team. One thing I will say is that it is red. Like eye burning red. We went to our seats like 50 minutes before puck drop so there were very few people there. Every seat is bright red. The gondolas are painted red. The scoreboard was all red and they had the entire ceiling lit up red. It was way too much.

I thought they were going to blow it at the hands of the refs, but they found a way again. The play Henrique made at the line on Nicos goal was beautiful. Hall looked absolutely dominant regardless of who he was with.

We also saw some wings fan in front of us googleing "who is number 63 for the New Jersey Devils?"

Last year Sev's had his best possession #'s alongside Moore. And now here they are playing well together again.

So agree, think it's about the two complementing each other, and not Sev's propping up Moore.

You mean they weren't googling who Gibbons is? :sarcasm:

Nice to see that Bratt is turning a lot of heads of opposing team's fans.

Severson is the only positive possession player on the team. No regular player is above 50% and Severson is pushing 52 (51.7) he also has fewer giveaways than both Greene and Moore and more takeaways than Greene, Santini and Moore.

I'm convinced some see what they want see when it comes to certain players

I noticed those bright red seats all game long.

How's the pregame bar scene out there?

The team Snapchat and Instagram had Stafford quoted as saying it looked like a completed side of a Rubik's Cube.

Its a Trap

Yes I’m still here to piss you off
I mean, if we could package it and a forward prospect for a youngish top 4 LHD, you wouldnt? I certainly would

of course don't trade it for a 31 year old UFA, but SHero is smart enough not to do that.
I’m not thrilled about the idea of it with how deep this draft is with good d prospects. Again, I know we’re ahead of schedule but it’d have to be quite the solid young defender coming back for me to be cool with the team shipping off our first.

I would be surprised if Shero deviated from his long term build through the draft plan just because the team has a playoff position this season. I don’t see Rico and a first bringing back a top defender beyond a rental and why trade a first for a rental with the team as presently constructed?

I would be willing to overpay bigly for OEL. He's exactly what we need at exactly the position we need it at exactly the prime of his career and he'll still be good for a long time.

The only assets in the organization I'd consider untouchable are Hischier, Bratt, Hall, and Palmieri. Butcher is very quickly playing his way into that category, ask me again in 3 months. Severson shouldn't be available unless it's for a better defenseman.

Everyone else is fair game - Zacha, McLeod, Santini, Wood, Boqvist, JW....even Schneider at this point can't be considered untouchable. Of course, it has to be the right move for some of these guys.

Exactly. This team just got rebuilt(and is still rebuilding). It's not anywhere ready for a Cup Run.

It might make it into the playoffs if things continue the way they are but regardless, I feel that Shero, imo, is going to stay the course and use our first rounder(even if it's a low draft pick) on the best available D-man we can get.

EDIT : AfroThunder brings up OEL but I'm wondering if the asking price is too high....

Do. Not. Trade. Our. First. Round. Pick.
Would you not say our competitive window is coming at least a couple years earlier than we thought? If you find the right player that’s the right age, you pull the trigger. A good top 4 dman that is at the oldest Taylor Hall’s age, I’m fine with trading our 1st.

Don't force rush the rebuild.
Continue to foster it organically with smart scouting and drafting along with shrewd trades.

A top pairing guy or potential top pairing guy? yes. A mid pairing guy? I wouldn't.
