Kessel vs. Toews?

Any thoughts on the two games between ND and Minny?

I would say Kessel, despite being shut out Saturday Night, although both had to impress the scouts.

Friday Night especially, Kessel was dominating, and was a threat at all times. He was quarterbacking the powerplay, he scored on a nice snap shot from the top of the circle, and made multiple plays at top speed and was flying every where. I really like the Kovalchuk comparison because of his speed and ability to execute insane moves at that speed, also his shot is dangerous from anywhere on the ice ala Kovy.

Toews got robbed of two goals Friday night, Kellen Briggs was brilliant on a 5-3 and made some scrambling saves. Toews still impresses me with his all around tools, and his ability to slow things down and find open passing lanes reminds me of Joe Thornton a bit, and is shot is underated.

Two special players, but based on this weekend alone, I would say Kessel #1.

I believe Toews will be at the WJC my self.

Its great to see people talking about Lee. IMO he was more impressive than Kessel or Toews this weekend. Toews actually reminds me alot of Brad Richards. He's about the same size and like sharkie said is great at slowing down the game.

I saw some of the friday night game, what a good game to watch, one of the better NCAA games I've seen this year, lots of end to end action. Was really impressed with Kessel and Towes. I saw Towes at the U-17's in the gold medal game but wasn't impressed, but then again I wasn't impressed the first time I saw Muller either but since the I can see why both are so highly rated for the draft. But from what I saw in the game friday Towes looked much better, hard to believe he's so young as far as NCAAers go. He used his size well, and was creating a lot of offensive chances. I hope he makes Team Canada.

Kessel was impressive as well, he's damn fast and you got to love his shot and the fact he doesnt hesitate to use it.

I've seen Kessel play quite a bit but this was the first time I saw Toews. He's definitely a talented kid and I was very impressed with his stickhandling. That said, I still think that Kessel's shot is better and his overall scoring ability is greater.

I only saw the U-17 gold medal game, I had a friend tape it for me on the TSN feed along with U-20 games.

Toews was the best player in that game all night. Leland Irving was impressive too.

But what wasn't impressive out of Toews that night? Or are you speaking of a different U-17 tournament?

As much as i like Kessel. And i do think he had the better week end. Comparing these two is near impossible to tell to me.

Minny is a much more offensive team with two very good players and leaders, Irmen and Potulny, to take the pressure off any one else on the team. Stafford and Zajac are both solid players but i do not see either as a college superstar. So Kessel has it much easier. Toews is a team kinda guy, a playmaker that does most anything out there. I do ot think Towes is fully acustomed to his own size yet. He will still grow. Kessel played against college teams last year so he kinda had an idea of what to exept.

Towes, just being a 17 year old in the NCAA on a team like NoDak is amazing in itself. The fact that he is noticable out there really should speak to good he is allready. With Toews i would toss numbers aside.

Kessel vs. Toews over weekend

I watched both games and came away impressed with both after Friday's game. However, I thought Kessel played at the same level while Toews didn't on Saturday. General impressions: 1. Kessel uses the same move on every one on one, but it seems to work. 2. Kessel can really shoot the puck. Impressive release. 3. Toews looked very dangerous as a powerplay specialist on Friday.

Anyone else see the games?

I watched both games, and my impression of both players stands: Kessel is the more instinctive, flashy and naturally skilled player while Toews is the harder worker and more understated in his approach to the game. Both are effective in their own way. I like the Brad Richards comparison when it comes to Toews very much.

same game. I thought Maxwell had a better game and was also impressed with Irving. There was also a defensemen but I can't remember his name, big kid was really young if I recall. I still have the game on tape and will rewatch it when the draft rolls around. I really thought Toews had a quiet game and for all the hype I wasn't that impressed. Big difference from what I saw on friday night.

I watched the last 2/3 of the game...I was more impressed with Toews. Kessell was kind of invisible he tried some fancy stuff that didn't work.
