So I'm in Tampa. It's made me realize what a mess our marketing is.

I am pretty sure that Ottawa Senators organization is not allowed to advertise in Ontario or Quebec due to the Leafs and Habs owning all rights to advertising in this hemisphere.

Would you happen to have any link to verify this? Also I don't think hemisphere is the word you're looking for if you mean Ontario and Quebec.

Are they not selling out every game? I am not sure and I am not to start something, but if they are, the owners/franchise has money to spend. They have an amazing product on the ice and I sincerely doubt when the playoffs start they will not have one empty seat in this place. And this is Florida, we are in so called hockey country, had an incredible product on the ice last year and the players have to beg the fans to come to games during the playoffs and then after an amazing run the senators have to tarp off sections of the arena. So, no butts in seats equals, no money, no advertising and cut salaries along with fans who blame the owner and not themselves. Good one Ottawa!! Tampa fans in sunny florida get it.

Leave it to someone on here to automatically blame the fans. Marketing isn't a result of us attending games or not buddy, it's the other frikkin' way around.

You are thinking of broadcast rights / territory, and even then, we own the territory from... I want to say Belleville in the West (though I'd have to double check that one), to the Ontario-Quebec border in the East, to the edge of the Gatineau Hills in the North, and to the US border in the south.

Leafs and Habs don't have exclusive rights to advertise in another NHL city, lol. That's silly.

why do you think they named the team the Senators. that way every time someone talks about mike duffy it is advertising for us. leafs cannot stop people from talking about mike duffy. pure genius

Business 101. You absolutely have to market your product. Coca Cola, Ford, Wal-Mart, Apple, etc.....you still see advertising for all those brands on a regular basis. A hockey team is no different. Just seeing a logo or brand everywhere tends to generate interest.

Tampa bay just smokes us all around right now.

Better weather obviously.

Way better Arena and game day experience.

Way better on ice product.

Favourite away team think I've been to. But probably cuz it's Florida and you can just stroll in wearing shorts

Same thing in Winterpeg... makes you wonder

What's the same? Makes you wonder what?

I'm having a hard time finding anything about the Sens marketing situation, just a few fan made 2013 articles about how the marketing department isn't what it used to be but nothing on the official team page. I can't find anyone that has ''marketing'' in their job title.

If you were to use say Winnipeg, they have 5 members of their management team devoted to marketing.

I think you're correct in regards to regional telecasts of games for the Sens.

Although because they allow Habs regional games to be televised in the "Ottawa Market" and the Habs reciprocate, I suspect they can advertise these games in each others markets, and they've had this arrangement since the Senators returned to the NHL.

There is no similar aggreement with the Leafs, because they refused when offered it by the Senators. The Leafs have always done whatever it takes to protect their market ............ even to the point of exercising their regional protection veto over the Hamilton bid for a NHL franchise when Tampa and Ottawa were the winning bids.

The only good thing about our marketing is our social media guy creates some great content under the dire circumstances.

All that you are seeing in Tampa requires money, and that's where the problem is.

The owner is poor, so our marketing will be poor, our front office is gonna be poor, our scouting is poor, and that leaves us to hire cheap coaches. Top to bottom, this organization is just poor.

This must be where the famous saying "takes no money to make money" comes from.

Is it really a fair comparison?

Residents of Tampa have a lot of competition for sports/entertainment dollars, than we do in Ottawa/Gatineau.

MLB, NFL, NHL, NCAA division 1 & division 2 sports teams, plus a number of Minor league & semi-professional teams and about 4 MLB teams hold their spring training camps in the Tampa Bay region.

Residents of Tampa grow up playing Baseball, Football and many other sports and hockey is not as ingrained in their culture as it is in Ottawa.

So I see the logic in the Lightning marketing to the extent that they do, but how is that a fair comparison to Ottawa?

I have also been critical of the sens marketing and again...it comes down to $$$.

It is well known that they don't pay salaries at market rates, so almost nobody worth their salt is going to join the sens marketing dept. Which is sad because Ottawa is a pretty cheap talent market to begin with.

Just for comparison, take a look at these two Marketing Specialist jobs. Take a look at the comparable below from other companies in the markets. The people that get hired for these jobs are competing against one another for the attention of the same consumers. If the best talent always goes soemwhere else, who do you think is going to win the competition for consumers.

Ottawa Senators Marketing Specialist Salary | Glassdoor.ca

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Digital Marketing Specialist Salary | Glassdoor.ca

Another proof point. This is a pretty ambitions scope of work form an intern. I have hired many college/university interns in my day. Maybe 5% would be able to take this on and do it well.

Employment Opportunities

Finally, I am pretty sure that the advertising spend budget is probably reduced to what they can get from local media for free in exchange for their suites/concert ticket giveaways as well, and you get what you pay for.

While you make a fair point about Tampa, when attendance is struggling up here you'd think that maybe some improved marketing would help.

I agree, our team should be marketed much better. I get the feeling with our team we're the 7th of the 7 Canadian franchises. As an aside it's great to see that team in Tampa doing quite well with marketing and on the ice as well.
