I don't think so.

Although the 4rth line is the new 3rd line in today's NHL.

I don't think he should be a mainstay by any means, but even in Anaheim he'd get shifts with Perry in the playoffs to give a different look. He can be the crash and bang guy here and there.

Would be nice if Thompson would provide some crash and bang for the Senators. He looks like another Kelly to me on a cushy retirement contract.

He offered very little on the ice and now that he’s off the ice we don’t miss him. At all. The management identified this guy as a must have signing.

I would rather have Chlapik or Paul instead of Thompson on the 4th Line. Heck even McCormick has more hustle, gumption and crash-bang than Thompson.

Dido does entirely different things, is responsible for entirely different things, and plays an entirely different position than Thompson.

Bad comparison is bad.

People overcomplicate these things too much.

One is a better hockey player, who drives possession better and is an actual threat to score from the bottom 6.

You need players who can make plays up and down the line up.

signing. WOuld do that every day.

Of course you would.

I never thought I would say this, but I kind of agree. If Max can reel in the stupidity he is known for in the AHL, he could be an effective 4th liner here for sure. Too bad we already a lot of useless players with NMC and an extra year on their contracts. Hopefully we can unload a couple, Thompson included and make room for some new blood.

Thompson is fine as 4rth line C. We could unload him, could potentially save us about 1M if we replace him with someone else. I just hope that the plan if we trade Pageau and Smith isn't that he plays on the 3rd line.

Yes. I would. Cheap contract for a reliable 4th liner and PKer

No, you oversimplify things too much.

Thompson is a center. He takes faceoffs. He's charged with the responsibility of killing penalties. He covers more ice than a winger defensively. He's responsible for challenging the puck carrier on the defensive transition. He's responsible for supporting the wingers defensively when the puck comes up along the board, while also supporting the defencemen by either taking the extra player when the puck goes into the corners, or directly digging the puck out of the D is late to the play, and then responsible for getting back into position afterwards. He's responsible for creating turnovers in open ice and getting that loose puck up to the wingers. He needs to pay attention at all times to which side of the ice the other team is presenting as the weak side, and react accordingly. He's responsible for circling back in transition to support the D when playing against a trap, but also being aware enough to support the wingers in a pinch if/when they find a gap in the defence. And on, and on, and on... All things that DiDomenico is not responsible for whatsoever. And we could make an equally long list of all the things asked of DiDo that Thompson is not responsible for, either.

Overcomplicate things? This is the ****ing NHL. The best hockey league in the world. If you're worried about overcomplicating things, stick to watching ECHL hockey.

If you can't understand the very basic idea that a "toolsy" offensive depth winger and a defensive shutdown center have two completely different roles that require two completely different skillsets, then you have no businesses telling others that their analysis is wrong.

Say what you want about Thompson not being an offensive catalyst with the puck, sure, but if you're going to compare him against other players, at least have the basic common sense to compare him to someone who can actually replace him in the lineup.

TBH, I would rather have 12 skilled forwards, the ****ing NHL, as you call it, is trending this way. "Defensive specialists" are going the way of the fighter. I would rather have a centre who can put the puck in the net that is responsible defensively. No need for a defensive center if your 4th line center can possess the puck.

Don't see any "defensive specialists" in TB's lineup. Pretty nice looking 3rd and 4th lines in Winnipeg too. These are the best teams in the league because every line that hops over the bench can put the puck in the net consistently. Burrows, Thompson, Pyatt, Dumont, etc. These aren't the types of guys you build your bottom 6 with.

Oh really? You're telling me all we need is centers who can score AND defend well? Oh shoot, it's so easy! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE ELSE THINK OF THAT BEFORE. I think you just broke the system with that groundbreaking idea! Hockey will never be the same! We are entering a new age of hockey strategy!!!

I mean, s**t, son, let's just all go down to the god damned DOLLARAMA and pick us up some CENTERS WHO CAN SCORE AND DEFEND WELL. Should cost us what, ten bucks?

Oh wait... I know why we can't do that!
1) those players all cost $4-6mil/year minimum on contracts with decent term, unless you draft them, in which case they still cost that much after their ELCs are up because the bridge contract is dead, and
2) there aren't enough of those players to meet league demand, hence the $ and term they command.

... centers who can score and defend well. Jeez. Like, of ****ing course teams want those players. 31 NHL teams want players like that. Are we even on a message board about hockey? You know what else is good? Skates and hockey sticks. Those are also useful in winning hockey games.

The second goal against the other night against Nashville (I think it was the 2nd one) is part of why Dido hasn't made himself a mainstay NHL'r yet. He's fine in 2 thirds of the ice, but in his own end he really doesn't bring much at all, and can be a complete hindrance. I like him, but skill sets need to match roles, and you can't have a team of Dido's and be successful. There's a reason the great Detroit teams had guys like Draper and McCarty on them. Pre-Cap days, they could go out and buy themselves skilled guys if they wanted, but knew that some grinders would give Bowman the soldiers he needed for specific tasks.

Thank you for your incredible hockey knowledge and my now bleeding ears, you have taught me so much. We are so blessed to have you around.

Point is, the game is evolving, 3rd and 4th lines around the league are getting younger and faster. No need to overpay for vets.

Thompson is the best player on the 4th line... can we agree on that... With Dumont and Burrows on the wings and with a ceiling on your offensive gifts ,. its going to be hard to shine offensively. With better wingers , Thompson would look better as well... When Chlapik or White or another callup are asked to center those two wingers we laugh and say good luck, but we don't give Thompson the same break.. I have no trouble slotting Thompson as a good / reliable 4th Line C. I'd slot Dido up in the top 9.. I would rather have a guys like Paajarvi and Pyatt as 4th line wingers.

I don't know why I read it in a Southern drawl, but it was pretty funny in my head lol.

Looking at Nashville last night, their bottom lines were quite committed to forechecking and playing hard, defensive , responsible hockey. I think Thompson will be important once the dust settles and better linemates are around. He is not the reason why our season is lost.

I think it was the third one, he went right to his net and left Subban, or the point, completely open.

Not that we did well this year anyways, but it looks like it was a better decision to sign Thompson than to hand the spot to Paul. Paul looks like he may have played his last game ever for the Sens and possibly the NHL.

I don't get the complaints about Thompson, he's been fine in his role. He's produced about as much as our 3rd line center.

Thank you for your incredible hockey knowledge

Dude, you're the one who proposed the doozy of an idea to ice centers who can both score and defend well. What's next on your ... goalies who are good at stopping the puck? Defencemen who are good at defending and can also get lots of points and hit and pass well and be good leaders and also have a degree in law?

We should just only ice star players. I bet we'd be a good team then. I'm sure the logistics involved in that are just minor details, nothing to worry about.

Point is, the game is evolving, 3rd and 4th lines around the league are getting younger and faster. No need to overpay for vets.

Well, your point WAS, and I quote:
"I would rather have a centre who can put the puck in the net that is responsible defensively."

If your point is different now, then I suggest you decide what your point actually is, and stick to it. Constantly changing your point doesn't make you look as though you're sure of what you're talking about.
