I am.

1 draft pick isn't going to make a difference

Getting Svechnikov or Zadina very well could. Besides, they don't have a first rounder next season if they stay inside the bottom ten so having a guy that could step in next season would help.

Yeah, it will. Imagine if Toronto had fallen off and not obtained Matthews. They'd be a middling mess right now.
We need a top three pick. We are not making the playoffs, so we need two things:
1)Play younger players and habituate them to systems;
2)Keep pace near the Yelnats Puc race.

Ideally we win v. MTL but tail off again, keeping us well ensconced in the top 3 race.

The number of draft picks, this spring, that could "step in next season" are few and far between.

Making the jump from junior to the NHL is not the norm, it's the exception.

Putting a rookie directly into the NHL just because he was selected in the first round, is not a sound development plan. If a rookie comes to camp, and wins a job, okay give him a shot, but just look back at previous drafts and look at the percentage of first rounders that jumped directly from Junior to the NHL in their draft year, and stayed in the NHL. The percentage is low.

We're 5 points away from Montreal and 6 points from Buffalo still , will take alot more than a couple wins to change very much in the standings or whatever chance we have at a lottery pick.

Depending on the Lottery Draft to improve your team in the long term, is not a sound plan to build a solid team.

Edmonton is a good example, and to a lesser extent the Sabres. There has to be much more than just the Lottery.

well I think it is the best approach h without question. The issue is not only do you have to be successful in the lottery you have to be successful in the right year. Some years there are multiple impact players and some years there are none.

look at Edmonton. RNH was the consensus #1 and while he is certainly a legit nhl player you want a lot more than that with a 1OA. Look at our experience with Daigle. idk the numbers ut he played about 650 NHL games and had several 20 goal seasons and was the consensus 1OA. But you want a lot more than that.

This year if we are lucky enough to get the 1OA I draft Dahlen and trade EK in July and make the ankle someone else's risk. Add Dahlen and the EK return and we are in good shape for years and better able to ride out the Phaneuf and Ryan deals.
