This is exactly what I was thinking last night in the 3rd period of Flyers/Rangers.

The Rangers had absolutely dominated Philly for the entire 2nd period, and the only reason it wasn't a blowout was Steve Mason's outstanding performance in net. There were probably half a dozen different moments in the 2nd period where it felt like the Rangers were about to blow the game open, and Mason came up big to keep the Flyers in it.

Third period... guess what happens... the Flyers start to control the puck. By the end, the Rangers had no offensive game at all. Final score 2-1 with a tense finish as the Flyers look for any random deflection that they can get past Lundqvist.

It makes little sense to me that the Rangers would put the Flyers on the ropes and then go into a shell of their own for the final 20 minutes. Some of that has to do with adjustments on the Philly side, but it was mostly a matter of the Rangers taking a chip-and-change approach to offense in the final period.

I watched the Avs do this with four separate one-goal leads last night.

You take a young, energetic team, and you give them the lead and they don't play the way that they played all year long.
