The first part of the article says that a calendar has already been distributed among all NHL teams. The season will begin one week sooner than expected, because of the olympic games. The habs will begin the season in Boston (excellent match up to start a season!) October 5th. The author says that all this should be made official very soon - in a matter of hours or days at worst. ESPN is expected to participate in the NHL comeback plan, and the league is also investigating internet diffusion of its game (like in baseball)

The second part of the article is a reharsh of what has already been discussed on this board about rules changes (goalie equipment size, shootout, change in line size etc. etc.). Nothing really new.

The author also claims that the draft will be held August 6th.

edited to add:
Note that I have no idea who Pierre Trudel is. Never heard of him. I would take this article with a grain of salt, although everything he is saying sounds reasonable.

I changed the date, I misread the article, sorry.

With the internet baseball makes a done of money and its a great service and here in Edmonton u still get to see a lot of the games but I would love to see the NHL to broadcast via the internet it would be great I seriously hope they do it, great to get some more international exposure.

I will translate
Canadian: to the game October 5

Rock Trudel

special collaboration, The Press

That will happen on Wednesdays October 5, to Boston. The Bruins will welcome the Canadian and the hockey will be return in our daily one.

In the chronic Antennas of June 9 last one, it was question on saturday October 8 as dates back to the official return, with the presentation of 15 matches and as much of placements in simultaneous games.

It was effectively the scenario concocted by Gary Bettman, but, with confirmed participation of the players to the Games of Turin and the obligation to conceive a more squeezed calendar, the Commissioner had to renounce this present. It was necessary absolutely to begin earlier and it was impossible to have the 30 formations to the work on Wednesdays.

The Canadian will be at Toronto the Saturday 8, as foreseen, and will not begin his local season that on Tuesdays following. Every team, and if one says you the opposite do not believe it especially, in uncalendrier possession to which one it would always be possible to bring an any modification, but she would be minor.

Our sources astonish themselves besides that all this again is not announced officially. A question of hours, according to them. To the worse one, of some days. The time presses. There will remain a lot to do, notably in terms of marketing, to attempt to bring back amateurs that, themselves they do not boycott, will be, to the better, very cynical.

Bernadette Mansur, vice president to the communications for the LNH, recently confirmed to ESPN.com the existence of a revival plan established in partnership with the players. One wishes to exploit their picture to the maximum, from which it necessitated of their collaboration. The league always was poorly notified on this point. Hope that the engaged new specialists will do it differently.

The LNH notes also all the avenues offered on the net one, notably regarding retransmission of matches. On this point, one counsels for him to inspire itself baseball that, on mlb.com, with very reasonable fixed prices, broadcasts or télédiffuse all its matches.

But all the marketing ideas, so inspired be they, will have no effect if the product disappoints.

A mémo

To this subject, a mémo sent by the league to all the teams at the start of the week last, and of which tsn.com obtained copies, threw a little light on the drastic changes that she wishes to bring and for which she set up a new committee players general guiding of which does left Bobsled Gainey.

Here the official list of the numerous envisaged changes. They all will be adopted? Maybe not. A strong majority? Doubtless.

> Reduction of the equipment of the custodians, of which the tibial ones to 11 thumbs. They more will not be able to handle the rondelle to the exterior one net than inside a limited zone.

> Return of the out game to Pejorative Slurement.

> Back up the nets of two feet.

> Once for all, tolerance zero towards the obstruction.

> Adoption of the shooting. But before of there to arrive, in case of pointage any after 60 minutes, there will be a period of five minutes to four against four. If no goal is marked, other period of three minutes to three against three. Next the shooting, if it there takes place.

> The winning obtains two points, the loser no, that imports this that decided final score.

> Expansion of the blue lines, as one has it expérimenté in the American League the last winter, and abolition of the red line.

> At the time of a release, if a player some attacks crosses the line of the goals in first, the sifflet will do to hear itself without that it have to touch on the rondelle. If it is a question of a player in defensive, there will be not any release. The guilty team of the release will not be able to change trios on this game stop.

> Automatic fine to the trainer and suspension to all player that would be the instigator of a fight in the five last minutes of game.

Last not at all: keep August 6 as probable date of the repêchage.

So then if they have a date set for the draft, one could assume that they already have a set draft format?

*********************************************************

FYI, Pierre Trudel is well know by the french speaking population of Montréal. A few years ago, he was hosting a sports show on radio (CJMS and then CKAC). He also was the host of a sport show on TV 20 years ago.

As you can see, he's been around for a while now. He is also good friend with Mario Tremblay as they've worked together at CJMS and CKAC.

He's working at La Presse newspaper since a few years now, writing about sports on TV and sports as a business.
He's also still doing the sports once in a while on the radio.

Last year, the schedule was released 7/14.

Also, 99% certain that a US cable deal is already in place and will be announced later this month.

Unless there is a clause in the supposed ESPN contract that says something like

"First rate coverage on ESPN"

You know, not worded like that, but something that would have the NHL knowing that ESPN won't hose us again.

Apparently Comcast and Fox are teaming up and they will carry hockey. What I heard is that they'll do more regional broadcasts, much like baseball does it.

Do you have any more info on this? Link to a source? Not doubting you; just wanting to find out as much as possible. And when you refer to Fox, are you referring specifically to the network of Fox Sports regional outlets, which are strictly cable (as opposed to the Fox network, which is not)?
