Youngest guy in the NCAA wasn't he ?

That cannot be ignored and TT didn't.
I think there was a backup goalie who was younger, but ya, youngest skater to skate in the NCAA is quite a few years if I recall. We really are quite lucky he fell into our laps. I remember watching the draft and after Thomas and Chytil came off the board, I was screaming at the TV to trade up for him...

Turner Stevenson 2.0 I betcha David Fischer's coach said the same things about him in college.
We had a shot to get Brayden Schenn according to reports, Philly asked the Habs for a First, a Second and Charles Hudon, and MB the idiot said "No"

The problem with Fischer was he didn't progress past his Sophomore year where he was solid for sure. Poehling is nothing like Stevenson. Maybe he tops out as a 4th liner but he's a very safe bet to play in the NHL as his skating, speed, smarts and effort will get him there barring any Chipchura like injuries.

Werenski was 7 months younger relative to his draft year.

Holy crap people are going a little bonkers. Yes he has had a good start to his first season after being drafted but calling him the steal of the draft? Come on.

On the Habs facebook feed one guy was going on about how he would be better than Modano...

There's only one word to describe my reaction when I read that Modano comment: Ta-bar-naaaaaaaak!

How is MB an idiot if that was the asking price and what the Flyers eventually got for him was a 1st and a cap dump?

Wasn't he also willing to do a 1st for Scandella, or something around it? Apparently one of the scouts told him to just pick Poehling instead and the deal fell through.

Apparently a lot of scouts had Poehling top 10-15 on their list, Timmins told MB to not trade the pick when it came to draft Poehling. We might regret not taking Schenn but in a couple of years we might say we have a steal and a young 2C 50-55 pts for many years.

He wasn't an idiot for not wanting to pay more than what Philly ended paying, he was an idiot because it would've turned out to be a steal.

Never the less the price was a bit overwhelming.

Lehterä
First round pick
Another first round pick.

Probably equivalent to
Hudon
Poehling
2018 first round pick probably in the 20s.

Hudon is a top 9 forward, Poehling will be a top 9 forward and the first in 2018 could be a top 6.

Well I think Lehtera was a cap dump, 2 years at 4.7M cap hit. I think they added more for his inclusion.

There are 29 other teams who wish they traded for Schenn too.

Poehling (under team control for several years) > Schenn (3 years then UFA). I would not of been upset if we traded our 1st for Schenn but I do like how we were able to snag Poehling. It's early but all indications appear we got a gem at the 25th pick. If the Draft was re-done today, Poehling might go in the top 10 or 10-15 range.

I definitely would have done the deal because at the time I didn't think Poehling had a chance to fall to us. The fact he did though makes it difficult. In hindsight I would probably pull the trigger on it. At the time though Schenn was viewed in a much different light than he is now, he was viewed as a PP specialist winger. The fact he's moved to center and is playing tremendous 5 on 5 hockey really changes things. He'd have been an amazing pickup, no doubt about it. Brilliant trade by the Blues.

Agreed. I think most of us would of made that trade before the draft. But things change very quickly. I'm banking on another solid draft in 2018 as well.

That's Poehling, Ikonen and Hudon for a 26 year old with a career high 26 goals. Hudon will probably hit that production. I'd have said no then and i'd say no now.

Poehling scoring on the breakaway after stealing the puck to create their 2-1 lead losing in the 6th period shootout. After a five minute 5 on five and a five minute 3 on 3, to bad they could have stayed #1 OV, instead of sharing the spot with North Dakota. Helluva game with amazing action throughout. Habs have a great leader in Ryan coming, a real character team they play with heart & soul invested in every shift, as did North Dakota last night.

It's so easy to talk about Schenn now. The guy was an average player before being traded to the Blues. At no time did he look to be a potential #1 centerman. He is surrounded by a great group of players, and coached very well.
