Not surprised. I go to games in Hartford here and there and every time I see him out there it seems he's just coasting around, takes lazy penalties. They have enough vets on that team, give a young kid a shot.

Clearing a roster spot. Trade? College UFA? prospect signing?

More likely, Malone just doesn't want to ride buses any more. That doesn't mean we won't do something in the near future, but I don't think this is a precursor to anything.

I wrote in the Hartford thread 4 days ago that this should happen based on Malone's inability to play, so I assume that the management saw what I saw: a man who can no longer play hockey.

He was a 4th liner in Hartford who was used as a PP specialist because speed doesn't matter on the PP as much. Problem is that he couldn't keep up even as an AHL 4th liner. If he wants to continue playing hockey, it will be on the bottom-6 in the ECHL, though I strongly suspect he'll just retire.

Malone seemed like an affable guy. I'm assuming he'll catch on as an analyst somewhere.

It's a shame, though. You have to imagine that most of the cash he made during his playing career went right up his nose.

He was done, and he knew it. He was also on a two-way contract, so he was playing for peanuts. Once it became clear he would never see the NHL again, he packed it in.

No harm, no foul. He certainly tried, and deserved the contract. Didn't work out, and didn't cost us anything.

Sounds weird saying that as a Rangers fan. Usually we sign people to painful contracts when they don't deserve it.

He's pretty much done and finally realized it. Helps us by opening up a roster--either from a trade or a free agent signing.

Nah he just wasn't very good and probably is done riding buses. There's also the fact that AHL teams can only ice so many veteran players each game; they've had to rotate which veterans sit. Opening up another contract spot does add flexibility, but I wouldn't wager this is some sort of precursor to another move.

Or it could be something to do with Don Maloney visiting yesterday.

But that would mean we are adding more contracts than we are trading away. Hanzal or Vermette for draft picks? Or is there a bigger trade about to happen?

It could be that they want to sign one of the youngsters. Skjei, Tambellini, Buchnevich? Nejezchleb maybe? For anyone interested, here are the numbers for these 4 players:

Tambellini - Calgary Hitman (WHL): 40GP, 33G, 23A, 56P, 16 PIM, +32
Skjei - University of Minnesota (NCAA): 18GP, 1G, 7A, 8P, 20 PIM, +2
Buchnevich - Severstal Cherepovets (KHL): 40GP, 11G, 15A, 26P, 12 PIM, +7
Nejezchleb - Tri-State Americans (WHL): 24GP, 12G, 17A, 29P, 28 PIM, -11

Unless any of these guys actually turn pro this year--any contract they will sign will begin next year. And it's possible that Tambellini, Skjei or Nejezchleb would play towards the end of the season on an ATO for Hartford which would not count either. I expect all of them to finish the season with the teams they're already on.

An extra opening allows the Rangers to add an insurance player or to do a 1 player for two players deal or to sign an undrafted free agent.

I hope Malone saved some of his money. He is a young guy and could have still played a few more years if he had taken better care of himself.

He's 35. That's not young for the NHL. He's a big guy and never was a great skater. From year to year the game gets exponentially faster and it gets harder for players as they get into their 30's and mid 30's to keep up. The guys who make it into their late 30's or even to 40--there's almost always something special about them. Malone was a good player in his prime. He was never a great player. Drugs or no drugs--his career was probably going to end right about now.

And if he's had agents--one would think he's had financial planners--and he did go to St. Cloud St. U. I believe. And if he graduated he has a degree in something. It may be useful. It may be not.

A team cannot terminate a contract without cause--Malone reportedly asked to be released:

The Rangers today placed veteran forward Ryan Malone on unconditional waivers. If no team claims him by Wednesday at noon for the $125 fee, the Rangers and Malone can mutually terminate his two-way, one-year deal.

Reportedly, Malone approached the Rangers on Monday and said this is what he desired. It’s not expected that Malone is looking to extend his career at this point.

Not surprised. Living not far from XL I go to quite a few games. He was clearly slower then the AHL talent and was purely a 4th liner and played on the PP. Took some lazy penalties and kind of dragged around out there. As a poster said before the league gets quicker every year as a player gets older. Frankly with the past issues I'm surprised it went this long, but again that said wish him all the best and hope he can live a good life.

Where'd you get those stats? They certainly aren't season to date...

Eliteprospects...

I was too lazy to go to the league websites and check the up-to-date stats, but here you go:

Tambellini: 50GP, 37G, 26A, 63P, 18PIM
Nejezchleb: 31GP 15G 21A 36P 34PIM
Buchnevich: 40GP, 11G, 15A, 26P, 12PIM

Can't find Skjei's stats at the moment.
