He was incredibly unimpressive when I watched him with Saginaw in 2011-12. He was selfish, had tunnel vision and didn't use his teammates.

From what I heard, he's had serious issues with his work ethic. He was an absolute stud as a young kid, went first in the OHL Priority Draft and had a great OHL rookie year. After that though, he likely already thought he was destined to be an NHL star and stopped working hard and started just going through the motions and thought his talent could carry him through. He's 21 now and put up big numbers in the ECHL but it's the ECHL.. maybe he has a shot at one day being an NHLer if he gets his act together but it's looking more likely that career AHLer with a possible stint overseas is his most likely outcome.

He did not have a good year in the OHL he lead the whole league with a Minus 30. He did not know how to play hockey because he did not have to in the Minors as his center and other winger did all the work for him. And now he still has not learn how to play hockey.

52 pts in 56 games is pretty darn good for a rookie in the OHL. I could just imagine what you think a "good" year is :shakehead

What if he was +35 and 2 goals 3 assists. You call that a good season?

yes that is a better season than being minus 30... to get to minus 30 when he had 52 points means he was on the ice for about 70 to 80 goals against.

That is what is wrong with him. And until he fixed that he will have problems even in the AHL.

The problem started in the GTHL he never left the center line stayed there waiting for a pass. He scored 96 goals his last year in the GTHL and the team never lost a game all year. But it gave him very very bad habits that he has not got rid of.

And when people told him he had a good year in his first year even thou he was a minus 30 he did not learn anything from that. He was the worst minus player that year in the OHL. Anyway you can say he had a good year if you want I will not.

Had he been granted exceptional player status he would have gone ahead of Taylor Hall in the OHL Priority Selection.

Ryan Oreilly went ahead of Hall in the OHL draft, Hall was taken number 2 by the Spits. If he was granted exceptional status the only reason he would have been selected before Hall would have been because he offered more years of OHL service, and not because he would have been seen as the better player. I saw Macfarland play in the OHL and he never looked like anything special to me. He was alright, don`t get me wrong, but he wasn`t an elite player like the hype suggested he would be in the OHL. He always looked pretty lazy even though he could skate when he wanted to, had a pretty good shot and could take it to the net hard but rarely seemed to want to. Not a guy you win with.

Don't get me wrong. He obviously had work to do on the defensive side of things but he still put up big points as a 16 year old playing against older players. He looked very promising. He was definitely considered a top 10 pick going into the 2009-2010 season (when he was draft eligible). It was assumed his game would grow on both sides of the rink. Never did.

Bob McKenzie had him 6th at the begining of the year, this is from September, 2009- http://www.tsn.ca/draftcentre/feature/?id=11944

6. John McFarland
The Insider's Take: The Sudbury Wolves' right-shot left winger can play a power physical game but also has the ability to put up huge offensive numbers and was one of only three players to get a first-place vote from the scouts in the TSN survey. The first pick in the OHL draft will get a long look for Canada's national junior team.

Just noticed he's playing in the ECHL this year and has 10 pts in 18 games. Is NHL unlikely at this point?

He'll probably be out of hockey along with Steven Anthony within the next five years.

Or maybe he can make a living in a 2nd tier league in Germany.
