It's really going to be interesting to see what that team looks like going forward.

Even outside of that issue with Trouba and all their RFA's and UFA's that they had before TDD. Does a Paul Stastny stick around? Guys made his money win or lose he might stick around in a place that looks pretty darn good right now.
The mason deal is backfiring on them hard with Hellebuycks emergence. Over 4 mil for a backup.

Id like them to try and work a bigger deal with Carolina and get the 2nd involved. Hard to project what Carolina really wants in return but maybe something like
Skinner/Teravainen and 2 OA
for
Puljujarvi, 10 OA,
This would lean heavy on Carolina liking the Fin connection, trusting Puljujarvi talent, and wanting to get bigger. I dont think Teravainen is as untouchable then some may think.

Bonus points if we can move Sekera back and get Faulk in return! Maybe a small add our end!

You know what's funny is people are complaining about guys like Faulk, Barrie or whoever as not being the answer. Over the years people balked at the idea of Byfuglien, Myers, Coburn, Mcdonagh, Girardi, Orpik, Niskanen, Orlov and a lot of the Vegas players.

Why are those players good enough for final four clubs now, but in the past 2-3 years they weren't good enough for our crap defense?

Most of the issue is with what people are willing to give up for Faulk, Barrie or whoever.

They can easily buy him out or bury him in the minors or on IR. mason is the least of their worries.
Burying him in the minors saves them 900k. Still costs them 3 mil on the cap. Believe it or not you can’t randomly put players on LTIR. Mason is a problem. Might cost them a good player this summer.

A buyout would cost them just $1.3M for two years. Easily manageable.

Enstrom comes off the books. Will have to wait and see what Trouba and Morrissey want.

Stastny, Matthias, Hendricks, Enstrom and Hutchinson are probably gone, that's $13.25M free right there to go to their RFAs. Lowry, Tanev, Armia and Dano won't command big deals, so that leaves Hellebuyck, Trouba, Morrissey as their main guys. If Trouba decides to go elsewhere (he's never been shy about his interest in leaving Winnipeg) they can get a big haul for him and have more than enough space for the others.

The real work is next season when Wheeler and Laine are both up.

Connor and Myers too (although they might trade Myers before then). The Jets are going to have to make some big decisions over the next few seasons, such is the price for success as we know all too well.

A quick and I mean quick fix to our PP is to sign Vanek. Give him some term. 2-3 years. Guy is unreal in front of the net.

He also shoots Right.

They still have a very very good core that should keep them competitive for a lot of years to come. Organizational depth is a helluva thing.

Vanek on a one year, $3M deal is such a no brainer for the Oilers that it's gonna really suck when they pass on it.

That's true but my point is that it's always tough to keep a team together AFTER the team has success. That's why it was vital for them to get Schiefele and Ehlers locked up before they and the team had its breakout.
Had the Oilers taken a chance on signing Drai the previous offseason when all the comparables were getting locked up, they almost certainly would have gotten him for around $6M.
