Yeah, the team doctor said it was a treatable form of leukemia. My source just said that Boyle had leukemia so I expected the worst.

Get well soon, Boyler! Prayers and thoughts are with you.

He used the word "treatable", and not the word "curable". I hate to be so negative, but Leukemia is a real *****. When I hear them describe it as treatable, it makes me think he'll undergo chemo or something in order to extend his life...but it won't cure him or put it into remission. It's possible he may not make it to 40...

On the contrary, this form of leukemia is curable, sports an extremely high survival rate, and Boyle says he plans to play on Oct 7th.

There's a main boards thread where you can read all about it.

Thanks. I'll check it out. I still don't like the fact that they only used the word "treatable"...

I think they're always hesitant to use the word "curable" when it comes to cancer. I think the goal is long-term remission, which is probably the closest you'll get.

From what I'm reading, most people stay on the medications indefinitely just to be safe.

Yeah. I've been looking for the long-term survival rates, and am just finding the survival rate 5 years after diagnosis. There seems to be a high survival rate 5 years out with this type of cancer if it is caught early in the chronic phase. But beyond 5 years is tough to find any info on. It seems there are new, very effective meds, so perhaps he can live on indefinitely. That would be great.

When is the deadline for cap and contract max requirements for start of the season? In other words, when will the waiver wire be busiest?

Traditionally it's always the last round of cuts where you get the prime pieces.

With Vegas' situation on D... 11 guys on one way deals... they can keep 7-8 and send Theodore down (can't believe ANA gave him up)... So that will force some moves for teams short on defense (CHI, LA, FLA, MIN)...

So usually it's the final two days of pre-season games is when you can get that steal... although this season presents some unique challenges with a number of teams being short NHL caliber bodies... so trades may happen

I did a short recap of my thoughts on the Islanders game in the camp thread and won't repeat that here. But in short I do think Pionk is ready, Graves is really close and ADA is the type that will mix high with lows but if you want him to become a good top 4 D in the NHL you gotta be willing to accept to live with the lows for a little while.

I think all these guys should play some in the NHL this season and basically start in this league in 18/19. They have potential, and like if we are retooling on the fly, can you imagine how valuable it would be to have 3 young cheap very good homegrown Ds on the roster??

Besides those 3 we also have Bereglazov who Clarke and Gorton really like -- for a reason. The kid is very solid, heady, got great size. Sure he could need a little time, sure he could bolt back to the KHL to come back next season, no matter what he will also be there in the running for sure.

Hence, we got a great log-jam on defense. This year we have SIX vets signed on defense, McD, Shatty, Staal, Skjei, Smith and Holden. Assuming that Skjei is resigned, FIVE of those vets are signed next season, McD, Shatty, Staal, Skjei and Smith. For 19/20 -- everyone besides McD is signed, all through 20/21. Our blueline today has a caphit of 18.2m USD and is one of the more expensive in the league, and it will raise well over 20m when Skjei is resigned and get to around 25m when McD is resigned. That number could basically be cut to 15m instead of 25m in the coming years if all of Pionk, ADA and Graves/Bereglazov is utilized. Freeing up those 10m for help up front would give us a great competitive edge the coming years.

Hence I think Gorton must act during the coming season. A drastic decision should be taken re Staal. I know many like Smith, I don't mind him. I think he might be a bit overrated if he is claimed to be a great top 4, his offensive does't amount to much and as a LHS on the right side he is hurt especially on the PK. But he is also gritty which is a plus. We just resigned him. He only has a limited NTC. It would be noted around the league if we dealt him -- its a bullet Gorton should explore biting anyway IMO!

One option is to deal one of the young RDs, Pionk or ADA. But would that get us fair value? ADA has a reputation, if we stick him in the AHL we will get a few cents on the dollar for someone that should be held pretty high. There is a great shortage of Ds like him around the league. There is a discount for 4th team in 2-3 years thinking. Pionk? Same there, would we really get value? If he played and did well in the NHL for a year, sure. But before that? Nah. Same with Graves. This is an option that might work, but also might be a dead end.

Just saying, something should be done sooner rather than later.

Big day today, two central calender events. Pre-season game against Jersey at 7 p.m. but also don't forget the Fed PC at 2.30 PM which is central for this team. A must see for anyone calling themselves a dedicated fan, it can be watched here: https://www.federalreserve.gov/live-broadcast.htm

If Yellen turns hawkish the USD will gain ground on the loonie which greatly can affect our off-season plans next season since it will directly impact the Cap. I think the market has started to price in a 50/50 chance of the Fed moving faster than their previous time table.

Edit: Should we create a GDT for the Fed PC?

Sign Jagr. As camp is ending throw Jagr a contract offer that works for us. Move Holden to create cap space.

I think the Rangers are definitely waiting to see how LA and Chytil do.

I just want Jagr to sign somewhere already so he's not the topic of conversation for every team in the NHL

What benefit does Jagr provide this team besides a tired nostalgia act? AV's entire system is predicated on speed/transition. What Jagr did at 45 years old is amazing, but he hasn't done either of those things well in quite some time.

Where did this myth come from that AV is a transition coach?

His choices on defense indicate that that's the last thing he cares about. And his breakout scheme sucks.
