I think this explains it: "The pair also clashed in 1998 when Karmanos made an offer to Red Wings star Sergei Fedorov, which forced Ilitch to sign a fat, $38-million contract with the player."

I think what BR is trying to say is that owners that complain about losing money are trying to buy something else. What BR fails to realize is that the owners have plenty of money, and are losing money ON HOCKEY! It's not a hard concept there BR

Seems like this is a ploy by Karmanos to drive costs up for Illitch. Looks like history does repeat itself.

Illitch doesn't make software and Karmanos doesn't make pizza ... What's the point??

Point here I would think is Karmanos has a personal vendetta against Illitch, it all started with the Fedorov thing.... Which started (IMO) this whole NHL mess in the first place. Karmanos needs to stop these childish acts.

They hate each other, thats the point. Peter is trying to hurt Illitch where it hurt most, in the pocketbook.

This feud starter with junior hockey and continues to grow.

Did Peter own the Jr. Red Wings? Seems to me I remember something about this way back when.

agreed. the owners arent claiming they are broke. on the contrary, they all say they have the money to survive this lockout. it doesnt matter that karmanos has the money in other business endeavors to do such things - its about the teams being profitable. why does karmanos have to spend the money from his other investments on his hockey team? shouldnt the team make its own money?

and yes, karmanos and illitch are heated rivals since their junior hockey days, when i believe karmanos tried to muscle in on illitch with his detroit junior wings, which became the junior whalers after karmanos bought the whale. then they moved to plymouth. like a couple of spoiled brats these two go at it.

I think their problems go back further than that though. They were both very involved in youth hockey in Detroit long before either owned any teams, that's where they first crossed paths and became rivals. It probably didn't become bitter until the Jr. Whalers and Fedorov situations.

Poor Mrs Illitch just wants to save jobs. But karmanos' offer is going to drive up the prices of casinos all over the country. They really need a casino price cap so that small market casino owners can afford their black jack dealers.
