can true hockey fans afford $8,000 dollars in season tickets each year up in winnipeg? NOPE....

can affluent american markets afford $8,000 dollars in season tickets each year? YES...

Hmm... if the American teams are starting their season ticket packages at $195 / game I might have solved the age old problem of low attendance down south... :sarcasm:

I think that a 2nd team in Toronto is the best location for a new NHL team. Their are obstacles in the way, but I think it will happen at some point.

Seems reasonable. Let me throw a city out there, Des Moines.

Population (Including Sub-urbs) of about a million and they are hockey mad.

If that's happens say goodbye to the NHL. The NHL is nothing without it's Canadian franchises, it's the NHL's foundation without it the NHL would crumbled like a house of cards.

Let's see - the NHL did fine with two Canadian franchises from 1938 until 1970, and three untill 1979 - it survived the loss of both the Jets and Nordiques - and would easily survive the loss of one (unlikely) or both (even more unlikely) of the Alberta franchises.

That is absurd. Thier arenas are fine for now, and Alberta's filthy rich government will be more than willing to fork out some money for 2 new arenas when the time is right. Do you have any logic to back up your claim, or are you just blowing smoke?

Not that this is even close to being an issue, but losing any of the 6 Canadian teams would be HUGE financial lose for the NHL.

In other words the Yukon or Saskatchewan is going to get a team soon.

:sarcasm:

Along with the great hockey fans in Mexico city. You heard it here first.

All these idiots wanting Nashville to keep its team but say Winnipeg can't suport a team need to get real.

Nashville (Tenessee for that matter) is a terrible place to put a team in.

Then 'cause they're some canadian fans who don't know buisiness wise the NHL you blatently bash Winnipeg. If Nashville has a team so can Winnipeg (no they don't live in igloos). I don't care how much fan support you have, you're not a good sports market without good corporate support (neither city has).

just what i have to say.

Nashville to Portland or Houston!

No it wont. Though I would love to see the province do it, both because I am a hockey fan, and because it would be funny to see the rest of the country explode in bitter jealousy as they did when Ralphbucks were distributed.

But Calgary's filthy rich owners are already planning for a new arena, and Edmonton's not so filthy rich owners are doing the same.

i am not blowing smoke....

i'm worried about the arena situation is both cities...

i'm afraid that left wing, socialist NIMBY folks may derail any public money going to build both arenas.....

we saw this when both jets/nords left....the provinical government would not support public money to build nhl caliber arenas.....

I guess this is why there's this urgency I keep hearing about how Nashville "has" to go deep in the playoffs or they're in serious trouble?

As much as I'd like to see another Canadian team, the places that have tried to get a franchise if Pittsburg falls through will get first dibs-Oklahoma City, Portland, Kansas City ect.

They want to grow the sport in the US, and the NHL's view is that sending another team to Canada doesn't grow the sport in the US.(whether that's the right approach is another thread entirely)That's why I don't see Canada getting another franchise.

Out of curiosity, how much does the current arena in Winnipeg hold? I heard it was 16,000?

Untrue, sir.

The city and province both kicked in $37M to fund a new arena for the Jets in 1995, plus $25M from the Feds. This was in addition to the city/province covering the team's losses from 1993-1996 in exchange for part ownership of the team.

It's 15,000.

There is the possibility it can be expanded slightly, but by no more than a couple hundred seats and a dozen or so luxury suites. It's built into a city block, so any serious expansion would involve annexing a street or 2, which would be very costly.

Says the Avs fan, whose city got handed a winning team. Nice personal attacks there, btw. Maybe it's you that needs to "get real".

Funny how the media of certain areas has chosen another victim now that they think the Pens aren't a good target for relocation anymore, feeding a bunch of pipe dreams.

Yeah, I used to get excited when a team was reported by the media to be in financial trouble. I'd always think "This could be the one." Always led to a big letdown.:(

The reality is that the NHL will exhaust all avenues in the US as far as relocating a team before looking to Canada, whether it's Winnipeg or elsewhere.

You must have been livid when Mr. Basille(sp?) was close to buying the penguins, followed by the talk in the media they would move to Waterloo of all places :amazed:

Sadly this is what I see too. As much in my dreams I'd love to see an NHL made up evenly of Canadian and Northern American cities, it ain't happening.
