Not interested at all in Diaz. I think he's proven that he's not an NHLer.

How do you figure? FWIW in montreal he played a lot of PK time. 2:44/Game this year, 2:16 the year prior. Not bad for a mobile offensive guy.

Thing about Diaz is he's a do everything player but doesn't excel at anything. He's decent and can fill roles well but not a PP specialist, not a defensive guy, not big nor physical.

He's not without talent, but I see him as being very similar to Kindl. Borderline NHLer. Can be a star in a euro league on a 1st pairing, but not good enough to be a top 4 guy in the NHL and not suited for a #5-6-7 role. If people think Diaz would step into Kindl's spot and not be just as hated 1 month into the season they are kidding themselves.

Wings have been told D Raphael Diaz has turned down their camp tryout invite. He's reportedly going to Calgary's camp.

Gotta admit, I'm a little disappointed. It would have been nice having him in place of Lashoff.

Diaz as a PP specialist, playing 15-17 minutes a game on a bottom pairing ? Why not ?

Now all we need to hear is that Sami Salo chose to retire or play in Europe rather than come to our camp to complete the RHD hate Detroit summer 2014 bonanza

Wow, even the invites don't wanna come to Detroit.

Where's the spot for him to compete for? We have seven D signed. We have a handful of good prospects knocking on the door in GR. Unless there is some sort of handshake deal to give him a spot, it wouldn't make sense for any vet looking for a job to come to Detroit on an invite.

Yeah. I don't see why anyone should get excited about this. We sign Diaz and trade Kindl Or Lashoff, how is that a good move when we have Sproul, Marchenko, Backman and XO waiting? Not to mention signing players to PTO don't always mean that team is hoping to sign them.

I guess it depends.

The question we should ask is-- if one of our top 6 D gets a long-term injury, who the Wings play? A #7D or a kid?

If the answer is #7D I think that Diaz could be a good move. If the answer is a kid, then I don't care one way or the other.

Lashoff played a good chunk of games last year, I don't think #7D are insignificant.

With 6 defensemen signed and Dekeyser an RFA surely to sign, plus the 3-4 kids chomping at the bit, he had more chances of staying on the roster in Calgary.

That being said, he would've been competition for Lashoff, Kindl and the kids, and that isn't a bad thing.

And this is why Diaz wouldn't accept the offer, why would he want to be a #7D?

He's been a #7 d man his entire career, and I don't think he'd be anything else here or in Calgary.

Guys coming in on a try out aren't going to be regulars, typically.
