The TV critic (Michael Hiestand) in the USA TODAY (10/21) mentioned the woeful OLN ratings (he said the FLA-NYR game was tied for 386th ranked TV show) but followed it with "Fox Sports Net's regional NHL games suggests somebody is watching: Its ratings are up 36%."

How many homes does OLN reach?

I live in Southern CA of all places, and I don't get it. :madfire:

I wish they would have stayed with ESPN.

Before Dish Netwrok threw them off, they were in about 65 million homes. ESPN2 is in around 90 million.

actually you're right. If hockey ever became as popular in the states as it is in Canada, not only would the NHL be in US cities only, but the entire league would consist of US players. I' not sure why there are Canadians who want the NHL to succeed in the US.

What is wrong with the deuce? The same people who produced the NHL on ESPN produced the NHL on ESPN2 which is located near ESPN on most cable and satellite systems.OLN has fewer subscribers.OLN is starting to remind me of the failed NHL on Sportschannel America experiment in the early 1990's :shakehead

That is a trip. I remember when that happened although i remember something to that effect in the mid '80's
USA network with Al Trautwig used to broadcast hockey games and when their contract ran out, another cable company or whatever broadcast it and NHL hockey wasn't available in denver area until ESPN 2 started showing games. I think it was about a decade or more that we couldn't get a game.

Barstow...Is that near Baker, in the southeast? If it is, I give you credit for staying in that sort of heat :)

How do you figure that? Canadians still will have great players, regardless of how popular the game got here...

Even if hockey became the most popular sport in the US overnight there would still be Canadian players in the NHL.
The level of talent that Canada produces likely wouldn't be impacted to any real extent, it's the fringe Canadians in the NHL that might be pushed out to make room for Americans that might not otherwise have started playing hockey as kids.

Crosby etc' aren't suddenly going to lose all of their skills if Americans were more prominent in hockey though, and even if the entire nation took up the sport I can't imagine there wouldn't be a single Canadian god enough to make the NHL.

How so? The Canadian product would be much more entertaining than the US product (based on better talent).

Hmm, Baseball is US national sport ?

Now maybe half of players come from outside US ? so your theory is off.

Why wouldn't they? The league would be healthy and the cities get their fix of Pro Sports in its greatest state. If the league becomes wealthier the owners will too and it won't be a bad thing for population and vactioners. All that will happen is that the ticket prices will go up and the Fans will still have to support their teams win or lose. Than we will see which Canadian teams really have hardcore fans and which are just a farce. You can scratch Montreal and Toronto off the list automatically because we all know how great those two cities and fans are.
