I read today that the ratings on OLN are drawing a 0.3 share, or 190,000 people!

What will Bettman say about that?

Thats actually better than the '03-'04 ESPN2 numbers.

I heard OLN is doing a piss poor job with their overall production, that could have something to do with it

Don't most hockey markets have local broadcasts on local channels, anyway? I wouldn't worry about it.

The big problem for the NHL in trying to attract a national audience is that they don't get nearly enough playoff games on national TV. A game here and there doesn't capture what is probably the best post season of all major NA sports. The NBA is on ABC, TNT, ESPN, the NFL on Fox and CBS, and MLB on ESPN and Fox(?).

The NHL is using the next two years to convince someone in the networks that their product has become marketable. NBC, with it's lack of sports content, is the best option. Maybe the deal in place now will set the stage for a better deal down the road. If you were a network exec would you enter a big money deal with a league headed for a work stoppage? No way.

I could care less about ratings. I love hockey, we all love hockey and if other people don't, screw them.

Yes, I too love hockey but we all don't love hockey. If this league doesn't make money (one way to do that is with television contracts) then the game will never be properly promoted or produced (see OLN...)

The Lightning's ratings are up 130%, Im sure its the same in other markets with teams.

OLN has sucked producing games and have blacked out a few games already so I wouldn't look too deep into those ratings.

So far OLN has put on a total of about 6 games this season. For the exception of opening night, these games have been on Mondays (against MNF) and Tuesday nights. Not the best of nights, especially when there are other "water cooler" shows on the other channels. Give it time, OLN's production should hit a stride at some point... I hope. Eventually they'll find a good mix of personalities for its desk jockeys and eliminate that wide blue and red score bar across the bottom of the screen.

So I am going to give them a shot, for a few months, before I begin to pass judgement. Pierre McGuire has already taken Neil Smith's chair, not sure if it's permanent. At least Pierre makes you want to punch something (usually him) instead of boring you to sleep only to be awoken by a Bill Clement jab at the Rangers or the start of the next period. In all, I think Smith's commentary is actually quality material, just needs to work on delivery.

I also would be more interested in how the local ratings are doing. Sure, now and then I enjoy watching a national game, but with an 80 game season more nights than not my team will be playing somewhere. Sorry but most nights I prefer watching my team. Football is hardly comparable as you get one game a week over 16 weeks so are not inundated. Hence the large audiences. Basketball and baseball are more comparable. Though not in my market of Pittsburgh where we have no basketball or baseball team so can pick and choose what game we want to watch.

What is wrong with the deuce? The same people who produced the NHL on ESPN produced the NHL on ESPN2 which is located near ESPN on most cable and satellite systems.OLN has fewer subscribers.OLN is starting to remind me of the failed NHL on Sportschannel America experiment in the early 1990's :shakehead

Here is the difference. When red wing games were on espn/espn2, they were blacked out in Detroit and we had to watch our local broadcast. I'm pretty sure it was like that in every market. With OLN, nothing is blacked out. The ratings would have been higher if the local markets were allowed to watch their team. Also, it tells me that people want to watch hockey this year but they don't know where the heck its on and what time its on. At least with ESPN, we all watch it and we see the promos. The NHL were better off taking half the money and going to a powerhouse like ESPN instead of the hunting channel.

I think we have already established that NFL style TV arrangements wont work for the NHL.

Splitting the national cable rights likely will not see the NHL get any more money, and likely will not see OLN or ESPN gain higher ratings, therefore there is nothing to be gained from such a plan.

I thought that now the local sports networks were blacked out for OLN games giving them even more of an advantage. Or do local networks still broadcast the same games as OLN?

I *think* they do both. For sure, they have exclusive games on Monday's which are not available anywhere else. I know this becuase my streak of attending or watching 690 consecutive Wings games will come to an end Monday in Columbus.
