Can someone please tell me if a player can be traded multiple times with each team keeping a portion of the player's salary.

For example, Dallas retained $900,000 on Ryan Garbutt when he was trade to Anaheim last year. Let's say, he's traded again to another team along with Cam Fowler. Can some of that money be retained by Anaheim, thus making him even more valuable to a team up against the cap.

On a related note, Ducks are not trading Garbutt, let alone retaining. That contract is golden for a budget team, especially considering what Garb brings to the table, and that Ducks are short of forwards to begin with. If a roster F was to be moved, someone like Cogliano with his 3M salary would be more likely to go.

One caveat here.......


If the players contract ends after the season ( like Shatty this season) you can retain only up to 50% owed at the time of the trade in terms of money paid and cap hit.

If the player is traded around trade deadline and has at least 1 full season left, they cannot retain 50% but can retain the max they can which would cover the players remaining amount due the season he is traded, thus free for acquiring team. Thus is what happen when buffalo traded pominville to minnesota with 1+ yrs left.

A team can still retain 50% in that situation. In a retained salary transaction the cap hit is split by the retained % and all of the salary going forward is paid by the two clubs based on the %. Teams aren't "retaining" on salary (or signing bonuses) already paid to the player before the trade.

For example, Keith Yandle was traded at the 2015 TDL with an additional year remaining on his contract. Arizona retained 50% on Yandle.
