WJC: Potential Top Draft Prospects at the 2018 WJC

Steve Kournianos

@thedraftanalyst

Did a 2000-word write-up for Pete Harling and Dobber Prospects on which first-year eligible draft prospects should be in Buffalo when the games begin in late December.

One thing is certain -- there will be more top draft picks at this year's WJC than last year, although it looks like Canada will bring mostly 1998's and early 1999's and zero draft prospects for the second straight tournament.

I'll be going bonkers at my blog with WJC coverage beginning in December. Check out www.thedraftanalyst.com for updates, recaps, highlight vids, scouting reports etc.

So where do we stand on the draft eligibles now?
A lot shorter, like 2 of the 7 USA guys he listed even got an invite (No USNTDP guy got a main camp invite). No Canadians got an invite. Lundestrom and Olofsson are at the Swedish camp (but no Boqvist). Kupari but no Kotkaneimi for Finland. Pretty sure Svechnikov is the only Russian with a chance. No idea on the other nations.

Alexeyev has a chance for Russia I would think, even with Bragin not liking to use 18 year olds. Kravtsov is also on their camp roster. Then there's Skarek, Zadina, Kaut, Lauko, Hrabik and Kral for CZE, Kurashev, Eggenberger, and Gross for SUI, Roman for the Slovaks. Sweden also has Gustafsson on their camp roster and obviously Dahlin as well. That's 17 already without counting any Belarus or Denmark guys, or more borderline guys on SUI or SVK. That's at least 12 locks, and by the time you add in absolutely everyone who's draft eligible for the first time, even the lesser guys who might not be drafted from a DEN or a BLR you'll probably be approaching 20.

Thanks for the write up, a good guide for us to go by in terms of guys who could make an impact at the tourney this year as well as in the NHL.
