Laine is a front runner. He pretty much only plays good when his team is controlling the play. Tonight the Wild shut the Jets down and surprise surprise, Laine was completely absent from the game. I see Matthews outdoing him if the Leafs can turn over their slump, so far the whole team has been bad but I expect things to turn in the next game.

or Laine is front runner, his team pretty much win games when he is scoring and hot. depends which way you're looking at it, he also can be clutch or other words put streaky. yesterday wild shut Laine and Jets thats true, surprise it was basically meaningless game, he usually delivers when needed.

absolutely not. its beyond silly to judge two guys based on 3 games.

Laine 2g/4pts
Malkin 2g/3pts

Laine >>> Malkin amirite?

Matthews now, Matthews future. Laine doesnt have to match up against Bergeron this series so awful comparison

For my eyes it have looked that Laine enjoys every minute on the ice and Matthews is at times looking like he would be anywhere else rather than in that rink. He might not be 100 % shape and that’s bad when playoffs come. He isn’t same guy now who he was first half of the season. And Maurice has luxury to use Laine 15-17 minutes per game which keeps him fresh through games and series.

you need to get your eyes checked. Matthews has a terrible game 1, fine.
game 2 shot attempts were 17-2 when his line was on the ice.
Game 3 he dominated and scored the winning goal

lets not forget this kid scored 4g in 6 games against the presidents trophy winners last year

Looks like a closer matchup would be Laine/Marner :sarcasm:

Oh well Matthews, you had a nice ride.

Forget the points. Laine engages in the games. He finishes every check and returns every slash and crosscheck. Has matthews had 1 hit in 2 years.

by that logic Bryan Marchment was very engaged and Nik listrom wasnt. lol
check out the game winning goal tonight to see how engaged matthews really is

Matthews and Laine are only comparable to folks known as "box score watchers". Laine and Marner are more comparable with Matty being in the tier above.

When your guy is not doing well in the score charts, just categorize the whole stupid hockey community as "box score watchers". Should he actually do fine, then don't forget for a second to remind every fan, their families, friends, relatives and even home pets about the NHL.com - Stats xD

When will people learn to just enjoy both players instead of feeling the need to tear down one to make theirs look better?

Matthews is a dominant even strength player when his game is on and is franchise cornerstone. Laine could be the best goalscorer in the league going forward. Both are tremendous, both are fun to watch.

Laine is a lot more personable though :P

Matthews is very soft. Nothing wrong with being outplayed by Boston's top line but being outscored 20 goals to 0 isn't even close. Amazing Toronto fans always say he is amazing defensively however this has been proven false on the biggest stage.
Boston hasn't even scored 20 goals in the series, let alone one line...

Laine is so much better. Just look at his playoff beard. Matthews is required to have Electrolysis to ensure no facial hair is allowed.

You make all your player evaluations on 2 games and ignore everything prior? I'm guessing your valuations change daily or you suffer from Homeritis.

What am i missing? Did Matthews not beat Laine in PPG this year?

I mean the stretch where Laine was red hot for 20 games and Matthews was injured how many threads were created about these two? Maybe take a look in the mirror

I'm sorry 3 games isn't going to change my opinion, especially considering the difference of quality of teams these guys are facing. Matthews and Laine are close, but give me the big C who's better defensively and seems to be better at putting up points. Only thing Laine has on Matthews is goal scoring and that isn't by much either. Both amazing players though.

They aren’t really comparable. Laine is facing an injured Wild team and he’s not even the biggest focus for the Wild. That would be Scheifele and Wheeler.

Boston is gameplanning to shut down Matthews. 70-75% of Bergeron line + Chara and McAvoy shifts coincide with Matthews on the ice in Boston.

Laine is a good player but he’s got a long way to go before he would ever need to be gameplanned against on the ice besides on the PP. Laine is magic on the PP, lots to learn at ES, it’s good for him that he start off his playoffs against an injured Wild team.

The reason the Jets don't have to face stiffer competition is because Laine helped them finish in 2nd place overall this year. If Matthews had played better maybe they wouldn't have to face such stiff competition in the first round?
Just like Laine is helping them win the first round of the playoffs while the Leafs will, yet again, be playing golf in April.
The Leafs are soft, just like Matthews.

If Jets finished 3rd, they would still be playing the Wild.

What a ridiculous argument.

If they switched teams Leafs would've been teeing off weeks ago.
