Lightning 1 - 3 Bruins

Bruins were lucky to get out of this one. The Lightning came out hard in more ways than one. 4 penalties in the first 10 minutes did not help their cause. If it wasn't for the ineptitude of the Bruins PP, the score would have been a blow out. Some commendations should go to Lightning tender, Curtis Joseph for keeping the Bolts in the game.

Sabres 5 - 1 Devils

The score belies the type of game it was. The Sabres made most of their opportunities. From my vantage point, the Devils played at the Sabres tempo. It was butt ugly match but this is playoff hockey. It remains to be seen if the tight-checking, physical game plan of the Sabres will wear them down. The man of the match was T-bo. He made key saves when it mattered most for the Sabres.

Islanders 3 - 2 Capitals (OT)

Heartbreak for the Capitals. Holding a 2-0 lead going into the third, the Capitals forgot that there were 20 minutes left. A Bure inspired comeback, the Russian Pocket Rocket still has that magic. There was a visible momentum change after the Islanders got the goal within the first minute of the 3rd. Capitals has to regroup from this one.

Senators 4 - 5 Flyers (OT)

Senators have only themselves to blame. The Stanley Cup champs was 0-for-7 on the PP. 6 of them come in the 2nd period. There were at least two occasion they were playing 5-on-3 hockey. They could only muster 7 shots for the period. Flyers have to thank the crowd as they were noisy and raucous with each kill. They were the extra guy on the ice.

Blackhawks 4 - 0 Jackets

Wow. No-one saw this one coming. Hawks came into the playoffs in a bad slump. But I guess as they say, its a new season once the playoffs start. Mid season pick up Dwayne Roloson proved his worth to this team by stopping all 30 shots. The 2nd proved pivotal as the Hawks was under siege. Jackets outshot the Hawks 12-2 and could not exert any scoreboard pressure.

Ducks 3 - 2 Sharks

The Ducks weathered the storm of the first period by allowing one goal. They came out in the 2nd with a 3 goal outburst to seal the match. The game became an ugly affair. They were some dubious no calls that left the crowd and commentators up in arms. No love lost between these two expansion teams. This is playoff hockey at its best.

Blues 2 - 1 Oilers

The class of the Blues left it late to get the win. The Oilers must be thinking what have they done wrong to draw the Blues in the first round. However, the Oilers must be happy with the performance of tender Evgeny Nabakov. He kept in the game during the Blues onslaught. The dysfunctional Blues offense must steal worry their coaching team.

Wild 1 - 4 Red Wings

Much has been said by both teams but it was the Wings that draw first blood. The Wings played counter-attacking hockey. The 3 first period goals were all against the run of play. The experience of the playoff harden Wings shone through in this game. The only cause for concern for the Wings is the 0-for-6 PP.
