I was looking at the Gretzky teams haha but Kurri led the Oilers in 1988-1989

Patrick Marleau recently (always behind Thornton)

Huh. A 'mere' 102 pts, so I just figured Messier probably had scored more.

nope, led the red wings in scoring in his last norris season

Jari Kurri.

nope, led the oilers in scoring after gretzky left

and also, before anyone checks, i remember that glenn anderson led the leafs in scoring the year he was traded there.

i'm not going to go through his entire career to make absolutely sure but dale hunter? in his big washington years, he was outscored by pivonka, bondra, and ridley. i'm guessing his biggest nordiques years he was blown away by stastny and goulet.

Al Macinnis finished his career with 1274 points, pretty sure he never lead his team in points, but was usually top 5 on Calgary and ST Louis. He did become the first defenseman to lead the league in playoff scoring in 1989, 31 pts in 21 games, which is pretty cool. Not sure if that disqualifies him or if it's just regular season.
Pat Verbeek led the Devils one year in goals, same with Whalers, but never led by points

Was going to guess Housley but he led the Jets in at least one season, 90-91 before I stopped looking.

Dale Hunter is a good answer. He was 6th, 6th, 7th, 3rd, 4th, 4th and 6th (Quebec) and 5th, 6th, 5th, 7th, 2nd, 4th, 11th, 8th, 8th, 2nd, 8th and 25th (Washington).

He was close in 91–92 when he was only 2 points behind Pivonka (he had more goals than Pivonka, so tying him would have been enough). He did lead the Caps in playoff points on his own twice though (1991 & 1993) and tied for 1st with a bunch of other players on a third occasion (1995).

Hunter's PIM record is better: 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st and 5th (Quebec) and 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 5th, 3rd, 5th, 4th, 3rd and 4th (Washington). Capitals had some prolific goons so he only led them once in PIMs.

I came here to say Glenn Anderson, but, as someone said above, he actually led the 1990-91 Leafs in scoring, which is bizarre.

Then, I thought maybe Brendan Shanahan, but no -- he actually led three different franchises in scoring (St.Louis, Hartford, Detroit)!

But I've got one!! Alex Delvecchio. Scored 1281 points (currently 35th, all-time) but never led the Wings in scoring, riding shotgun alongside Howe all those years. He was a remarkable player with Howe-like longevity, and he played two more seasons after Howe retired from Detroit... but then he was usurped by the new-breed, notably Marcel Dionne and Mickey Redmond. So, he never led the Wings in scoring despite finishing top-3 countless times.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Al MacInnis is another one.

Marleau actually outscored Thornton and led the Sharks in points in 2011. He was also San Jose's leading scorer in 2001 and 2004.

He had a 100 point season in 1990-91 but wasn’t even the Flames leading scorer that year (Fleury edged him out by 1 point 104-103)
