(Sorry if this has been covered before; I don't recall seeing it discussed in depth.)
The topic is Players Dominating their Teams' Scoring (per season... or longer, if you like). I guess this can be broken down into points, goals, and assists separately as you like.
So, I think it's well established that Mario Lemieux had the biggest domination of a team's scoring (did he?) -- in terms of points-per-team's-goals -- in the 1988-89 season. Naturally, he and Gretzky will score very high on this sort of list, as usual. So, I've taken those two player's most team-dominant seasons (of minimum 43.0% of team scoring) and ranked/listed them here:
1) Mario 1988-89 (Pitts.) -- 57.35%
2) Mario 1987-88 (Pitts.) -- 52.66%
3) Wayne 1984-85 (Edm.) -- 51.87%
4) Wayne 1981-82 (Edm.) -- 50.84%
5) Wayne 1985-86 (Edm.) -- 50.47%
6) Wayne 1980-81 (Edm.) -- 50.00%
7) Wayne 1986-87 (Edm.) -- 49.19%
8) Mario 2002-03 (Pitts.) -- 48.15% (despite missing 15 games)
9) Wayne 1990-91 (L.A.) -- 47.94%
10) Wayne 1982-83 (Edm.) -- 46.23%
11) Wayne 1983-84 (Edm.) -- 45.96% (despite missing 6 games)
12) Wayne 1997-98 (NYR) -- 45.69%
13) Wayne 1979-80 (Edm.) -- 45.51%
14) Mario 1985-86 (Pitts.) -- 45.05%
15) Wayne 1988-89 (L.A.) -- 44.68%
16) Mario 1995-96 (Pitts.) -- 44.48% (despite missing 12 games)
17) Wayne 1993-94 (L.A.) -- 44.22%
18) Mario 1992-93 (Pitts.) -- 43.60% (despite missing 20-odd games)
(I also suspect Wayne was around 42-43% of L.A.'s goals late in 1995-96 when he was traded to St.Louis, and there are a few other seasons where each player is bubbling just under 43%, but whatever....)
There must be other examples of player total scoring points hitting similar levels? (My 43% here is just arbitrary, but seems a decent cutting-off point for elite team-scoring dominance.)
Then, how many players have scored 20.00+ % of their team's goals?
In 1988-89, Mario scored 24.50% of Pittsburgh's goals, and 21.94% of them in 1987-88. In 1981-82, Wayne scored 22.06% of Edmonton's goals. Esposito scored exactly 20% of Boston's goals in 1971-72. In 1989-90, Brett Hull scored 24.41% of St.Louis's goals, 27.74% in 1990-91, 25.09% in 1991-92. In 1999-00, Pavel Bure scored 23.77% of Florida's goals, and then a staggering 29.5% in 2000-01. Selanne scored 23.60% of Winnipeg's goals in 1992-93.
I'm sure there are several other examples (esp. more historical ones) that I'm missing...?
About assists: Wayne Gretzky assisted on 38.27% of Edmonton's goals in 1985-86. I didn't run all the math, but it seems he was around 32-33% most of the Edmonton years, and about the same (slightly less) in L.A. But he also hits 35.88% of L.A.'s goals in 1990-91 and 34.01% of NYR's goals during 1997-98.
(Mario, btw, assists on 30.72% of Pittsburgh's goals in 1987-88, 32.85% in 1988-89, and -- his highest, amazingly -- 33.33% of the woeful 2002-03 Pens, despite missing those 15 games!)
Who else -- maybe a defenceman -- could challenge Wayne's team-assists dominance?
