I have been debating with friends on what Phillip Danault's next contract should look like. They are saying he will be in the 4.5 to 5 million range for 5 years while I am saying in the 3.5 range for 3 or 4 years.

What are other's thinking?

5 millions are they crazy?

Phillip Danault is a good 3rd line center at this point so it should be 3rd line center money.
Around 3 to 5 years from $2.75M to $3.75M

depends on what both sides want. If Danault thinks missing a chunk of time hurt his numbers so a 1 year show me deal in the say 2.5-3M range or do both sides just want to get it over with and do a 6-7 year 3.5-4.5M deal? Guess we'll see.

He's getting at least 4 million/year guys

Eller just signed for 5 years at $3.5M and the Caps bought 5 years of UFA. Eller is tracking for 40 pts this year

Danault still has how many more years of RFA after this year? I believe it is 2 more years? Danault got 40 pts last year and is also tracking to 40 pts this year (24/48).

So I think it depends on term. Take your guess at what his arbitration numbers would be in the next two RFA years. Lets say $3M? Then lets use Eller's contract for UFA years.

- 4 year contract, we buy 2 years of UFA. (3+3 + (3.5 x 2)) / 4 = $3.25M AAV
- 5 year contract, we buy 3 years of UFA. (3+3 + (3.5 x 3)) / 5 = $3.3M AAV
- 6 year contract, we buy 4 years of UFA. (3+3 + (3.5 x 4)) / 6 = $3.33M AAV

Just a wild guess but I think this is what negotiation looks like between the two sides or at least from the Habs side of things. Danault and his agent will use our bad center depth at leverage and push for a higher AAV.

I think the AAV should be $4M max and I would target a 6 year deal (age 25-31) Make both sides happy and go for 6 years at $3.9M. Danault can go after another 5 year contract at the age of 31.

Am I right or wrong about Danault having 2 more RFA years?

I think it will come in similar to shaw 6 years at about 4mil. Considering what high-end 3c's are getting paid now it seems like a reasonable guess.

The exact same deal Lars Eller has gotten with us last time around.

He may be a 3rd line centre but unfortunately for us Danault is our 2nd line centre. I don't see him getting less than 4 million.

I think it will all depend on how many years Danault wants to be locked up for.
Don’t think the AAV will be over 4M a year.
My guess would be 5 or 6 years with a cap hit about $3.5m per.

With him making 950K this year, I had wondered if they might do one more short term deal and then lock him up long term to keep his cap hit down early but then I thought about it and it hit me that we don't really need to worry about cap space likely any time soon.

On a side note, I don't read that many non prospect threads on here and I'm usually all business when talking hockey but I did a double take when I saw the duffman avatar and had to look up if you just came back or have been around as there aren't many of us from the early days still around.

I'm still here...not as much as before...not even close. Always read your prospect stuff. That alone makes this site a must visit.

I think if you are being honest, he doesn't get more than $2.5 million. $4 million is putting him up there with some proven centres. He has not established himself as a viable #1, #2, and still lacks the faceoff/shutdown potential of a #3. He should start next year as a #4. That's why $4 million sounds absurd. Given what other #3 centres earn. The Jets signed Adam Lowry coming off his entry level to 2 yrs/$3.5. I would take him over Danault 10 times out of 10. $2.5 per is generous.

I think you aren't being honest, so there's no need to go further.

It will be no less than 4m cap hit

Hi numbers have tailed off this year. I wouldn't be surprised if it was 3.5 or 3. He's not a UFA. His best season was only 40 points playing with Radulov and Pacioretty.

I'm thinking it'll be around 4x4. Slightly higher than maybe deserved, because of his leverage that he's arguably our best C (of Drouin isn't a C)
