I came here to ask -why? Grooby has been great, I think they should roll with him. Holtby is deadweight IMO, Nuevirth chokes in the playoffs. What are your thoughts.

What?

6 bad games for a 24-year old goalie and suddenly you are trash?

Holtby and Neuvy need the games to continue their development. Don't forget most goalies peak later in their careers then forwards. Besides that, until you can get rid of one (if thats what the plan is) then having 3 on the roster is idiodic

Not trolling, said IMO, and don't deny that Grooby has been the best this season. Holtby let in soft goals in big games and in the playoffs. He may be a goalie in the league, but never better than mediocrity. I was angry as heck when they got rid of Varly, people laughed at me, now look at where he is at. So its not like Caps have been great at bringing in goaltenders. They have the horses, they just don't know how to use them.

I don't see how you send a goalie down who has been drop dead stellar for you. Now thats stupid. Holtby has not been good this year and its not in the numbers, this guy has a penchant for letting in bad goals or goals he should have at terrible times.

Exactly, so for the time being, ride the hot one unless your going to shop one.

There's a difference between being "dead weight" and letting in a softy now and again (which every goaltender does). Before his recent slump I'd say Holtby was an above average netminder easily considering the defense he has in front of him and he steps up in the playoffs.

Neuvirth has played 9 playoff games with a .912 save percentage and 2.34 GAA. Can't really look at that GAA and say that he choked in his apperances with such a small sample size or it would be vastly inflated (his GAA in the playoffs is comparable to what Varly is putting up this season).

I liked Varlamov too, I thought it was just a matter of time before he'd have a breakout season so long as his injuries didn't persist and he got a full time goal-tending coach. I think the same is true of Holtby despite Kolzig's best efforts.

Grubauer was playing well for a while but his last two games he shat the bed and this team doesn't know how to deal with players well so he's taking a trip down to Hershey. Maybe it has to do with him playing over the olympic break as well.

important point. both neuvirth and holtby have had early runs of games where they have been really good. as young goalies its very hard to them to keep that up. its normal. look at carey price.

so, reality says that grubauer, even if he becomes a vezina winner is going to have some big bumps in the road between now and then. it makes no sense at all with that in mind to go and ditch a goaltender that has beaten a lundqvist or tim Thomas in a playoff series because of a hot rookie stretch of games.

To send Grubby down is an easy outlet for the organization. His last game, I blame him for 1 goal. Neither Holtby or Neuvy have stepped up to be #1 or 2. This looks like a desperate move by the organization to make one of them step up. Hopefully Grubby goes down and works hard. This team is in such disarray it is unreal.

You would rather send down Neuvy or Holtby?

No, but does Grubby deserve to be demoted?

Deserve? No. But the situation calls for it. He's the youngest of the 3, has the least experience, and more importantly can go down without having to go through waivers. Then add in the fact that by sending him down now he'll get to play in the AHL over the olympic break and it's what every gm in the league would do in the same situation.

Now, if I were the GM I wouldn't do this, but, it's conceivable at least that GMGM is out shopping Neuvirth and will get a trade done before the end of the break, in which case he'd get called back up.

But, these guys are all young, are all going to have their chance, and are all going to have some consistency issues along the way. So it doesn't hurt anyone (except /maybe/ the caps chance of winning) to send him down.

The one we don't lose to waivers.

I understand stand why he is being sent down, so now we are a team that doesn't play the best players at their positions? GMGM has slowly been deteriorating this team and this is just one more example unless he pulls a huge trade out of his @$$.

we have all seen young players get a chance in the nhl and for a short time really look like something. making a long term decision, removing a player from the organEYEzation...say, based on a 10 or 15 game spurt is often times a mistake.

lets look at holtby in the reverse. based purely on his play during this grubauer period and shortly before he would be the one of the three goalies that would be shipped out to keep grubauer? I bet that is not what you would want.

Do you not remember the Karl Alzner saga? He played in the AHL for probably a full season longer than he should have if the team was composed solely based on best player/talent because he was waiver exempt.

I have no problem with this move. Holtby and Neuvirth are healthy, Grubby had clearly cooled off, and he's waiver exempt. Send him down.

Alzner also didn't look great in his short NHL stints, though that may have been because he was forced to play on the right side with lackluster partners.
