In a RDS interview with Lemieux at the ASG, I don't have a link of course since it was live on TV but here's a small recap:

Interviewer: What is your priority?
Lemieux: Of course I'd like to keep the team in Pittsburgh.
Interviewer: How would you evaluate the odds?
Lemieux: Pretty small.

Take it for what it's worth...

Meanwhile, Luc Robitaille said that he expects the team to stay in Pittsburgh.

Is that the odds of them staying or leaving?

Who the hell is that Barden guy that just randomly visited the meeting?

Seriously, this really reminds me of a soap opera and every day I open this thread to find out what insane thing is happening next.

Hopefully that slimey guy (he seems slimey, anyway) stays out and the Pens get their arena.

Barden owns the casino that won the license over the IOC. He's footing something like 7.5 mil a year for the arena under plan b. If Barden was to stay out of the deal it would look even worse for the Pens.

"After four consecutive last-place finishes"

Nice journalism. :sarcasm:

In the last 4 NHL seasons...

1) 2001-2002 = Finished 26th with 69 Points
2) 2002-2003 = Finished 29th with 65 Points
3) 2003-2004 = Finished 30th with 58 Points
4) 2005-2006 = Finished 29th with 58 Points

... Penguins finished last once.

you do realize that the Penguins did finish last every one of those years? They were the last place team in the Atlantic division for every one of those years, and last in the Eastern Conference for 3 of the 4 seasons... nice research :sarcasm:

Rendell optimistic...

Burkle is the driving force behind this right now. Him and Eddie go back quite a ways. Mario needs to stay out of the negotiations and let Rendell and Burkle handle them and all will be well.

Even as state and local politicians and the Penguins haggle over an arena deal, Gov. Ed Rendell disclosed today that he talked to team co-owner Ron Burkle last night and expressed confidence that an agreement can be reached to keep the franchise in Pittsburgh.

"We want to reach an agreement. We think we're getting closer. We're hopeful."

Mr. Rendell said he and Mr. Burkle talked about "some of the issues that need to be narrowed a little bit and we both agreed to work on them." He said he expects to talk to him early next week about the Penguins situation. He said no formal negotiating sessions have been scheduled between the two sides.

"Look, Mr. Burkle is a great businessman. You don't accumulate the type of resources that he's accumulated without being a smart businessman. He's trying to get every advantage . . . We want to make sure the resources we devote to this are appropriate, not too much, not too little," he said.
