I voted Nate by a nose.

But man, Geno was ridiculous in the 2009 playoffs.
Peak Malkin in 2011-12 was pretty insane too. Haven't seen Mackinnon lap the league like Malkin did that year.

Malkin's peak 11-12

109 points in 75 games league g/pg 2.73

Adjusted to g/pg of 23-24 (3.12) it comes out as ~124-125 points in 75 games or ~136 point pace over 82 games. MacKinnon currently has 123 points in 72 games. It's pretty close.

To be fair he is lapping the field outside of McDavid and Kucherov. Can't blame him for having so tough competition at the top this year.

It's definitely close, but when you consider that Mackinnon gets to play with guys like Rantanen, Nichushkin, and Makar, I think that gives the edge to Malkin. He turned James Neal into a a point per game player - and there was no Crosby for most the year.

Also, scoring increases don't distribute evenly. Typically, top scorers get a larger benefit from incremental scoring benefits (i.e. a 14% increase in league wide scoring probably gives top scores a ~20%+ bump in production).

Example: 10th place in scoring this year is producing at 1.26 points per game vs 0.99 points per game in 2011-12, a 27% increase.

Agreed with your first paragraph, he doubled Neal's scoring production (he was at 39 points with Dallas the season prior). I also wonder, if for some reason Sid was not on the Penguins and Malkin was the full-fledged #1 C, how much better his scoring stats would be, since he's always been second fiddle to 87.

Play style wise, Malkin can definitely keep up as an individual game breaker with Mack, and I wonder if his playmaking is enough better. I'd probably go with 71 too.

Your gpg numbers are wrong for 2012.

To be fair, Nichushkin had 10 assists in 57 games in Dallas and had his contract bought out before coming to Colorado.

Yeah, he's definitely helped Nuke, but Nuke has also shown to be a late bloomer and a great player in his own right. I would take Mackinnon's supporting cast over Malkin's in 2011-12 every day of the week.
